Help me pimp my 870 MM: From a purist to tacticool, I'm so ashamed.

Well now look at what you made me do. I done did bubba it up somefin' fierce.

When the laughter subsides I present to you a crude proof of concept.

A Simple piece of pine board shaved with a retractable razor/carpet knife because my wife is sleeping and I would die instantaneously if I woke her using power tools. (Thanks for the tampax advice lorax. Already put to good use). :D

The only permanent damage I've done are the 4 small holes I've drilled into the M4 seen here, 2 on each side.

The proof of concept is great. The recoil pad mount is very sturdy, and as I pull the shotgun into my pocket hard enough to compress the buffer tube ti feels much better, no tight edges diggin in where there shouldn't be. All I gotta do is trace the larger sized M4 butt and cut it out, then trace on the other side the R3 recoil pad outline then sand it down with my belt sander so the transition is nice and smooth. Then stain it black and apply some polyurethane and I'll have a pussycat of a slug gun.

As for the Stock adapter, after a little more time playing with it, I've come to realize a few small imperfections in the design. The grip is very long with spaced out fingers. While working on some transitions, I've noticed that I tend to grab the pistol grip one finger high as seen below. The problem is the top of the adapter just above the pistol grip is not a smooth surface for the webbing between your finger and thumb. I'll probably end up taping this part with electrical or hockey tape just to smooth it out.

All in all I love the stock. Finally a LOP for the bigger guys.

In the end it's your gun and you should do what you like with it, not what some old fart FUDD thinks is good, anyhow FUDDs are a dying breed, long live Generation Tacticool.

what stock conversion is that? the gun looks SO awesome. I would prefer it with only ghost rings, and a conventional foregrip, and maybe add a recoil pad... (i prefer simplicity and function over real tacticool features) either way it looks extremely and seriously badass.

my personal recommendation for uncostly and functional, yet highly cool shotgun setup:

less than $500 for that whole setup. 300 for the gun (12.5" grizzly), 70ish for the mesa shell carrier (its QUALITY), and another 70ish for the hogue overmoulded furniture (lots of grip, comfy). nice sights, good and short, swap chokes, smooth action. everything you could ever need! besides all the tacticool fancy stuff (AR stock conversion pistol grips single point sling full length rails flashlights scopes etc etc... whole other ballgame there)

Don't you have any black paint?? Wood is not tactical, you know that.

At any sporting goods/gunshop you can buy R# pads and limbsavers for about $50. They come with a flat pad for wooden stocks. It will be much easier to install and provide a cleaner line. You should take your stock with you and look into the Limbsaver "Grind to Fit" series, they come in small medium and large.

I have a recoil pad that slips on the end of my stock. Dont know where it came from as it was already on when I bought from a member here. It does have the name "Viking" on it. Maybe you can research it.

Update! It's now pretty much done. I have it exactly the way I want it, save for the bubba'd recoil pad. I'm open to options, but I like it right now. I just screwed it into the plastic frame of the original R3 recoil pad via 4 small screws. I'm so happy! :D :shotgun:

Now I has an 870 Marine Magnum:

1. Mesa Tactical LEO stock adapter.
2. Hogue Pistol Grip
3. Slightly bubba'd but secure R3 recoil pad. (Without the wood spacer)
4. Mesa Tactical 6 shell sureshot side saddle.
5. Hogue forend
6. Trijicon/ Scattergun Technologoes/Wilson Combat ghost rings courtesy of Casey Brewer at TacOrd. (Excellent guy to deal with! Recommend to anyone in a heartbeat).
7. Vang Comp stainless steel mag follower. (Just for that littel bit o' pimpin' bling!
8. Enidine Recoil buffer tube.

Being nickel plated inside and out, this shotgun is now officially bad ass. It looks very cool to me, is supremely functional, smooth and reliable. I can throw it in the snowbank in the back yard pick it up in the spring and it would be fine. I now have it dressed up as a tactical shotgun (I'm so ashamed) so the FUDD's at the OSGN shoudl now be as disgusted as they are when they see my black rifle and handguns. WOOT!

I now dream in 12 gauge. Pics:

You know it is the little things like the ball detent that I love about the 870.

Remington made a great shotgun with the 870. Then they improved upon it with the excellent electroless nickel plating of the marine mag and a great magazine extension. I believe that I have now brought it damn close to perfection. Super grippy Hogue handling, adjustable length of pull, recoil reduction built in, extended mag capacity and external storage. I played around a bit indoord with African carry and some simple tansitions and I found that the surface area of the Mesa sureshot saddle is big enough to make contact with my shoulder blade comfortable. I may not feel the same way about the 4, but the 6 shot is excellent. I also love the Mesa pushbutton sling adapter as I prefer the position of the rear sling attachment better on the stock adapter than on the buttstock. Makes the whole thing ride higher and tighter rather than a low and droopy/dangle-ey conventional sling.

I now have my first addition to the tac shotgun thread! YAY! Thanks to everyone for all the opinions and insight on this forum as well as shotgunworld. While the gun will only see the range and a little Northern Ontario deer hunting and sandpit clay games with my hillbilly friends, I am so pleased with the tacticool dress-up.
