Looking for a gift for someone just getting in to hunting (a rifle and scope setup that will last a lifetime).

I see a lot of threads asking similar things like what rifle should I buy, but with all different types of criteria, yet I see the same rifles and scopes being suggested over and over like someone is enjoying beating the dead horse in mulitiple threads regardles of the actual needs the OP has.

So here is the criteria, no magnums, no 2 locking lug or less bolts, detachable mag or double rifle or drilling, prefer fluted barrel without sights (bolt or semi) scope and no sights on the double and both with see through mounts on a drilling.

Thanks in advance for your ideas, please post a little bit about why you would choose what you are suggesting or I will not take the suggestion seriously.

Buying a rifle for someone else is brave. I would suggest if you're willing to drop 10k on a premium rifle to visit a shop that carries a great selection and heft a few. You could fly into Alberta and visit Prophet or one of the other outfits and make a weekend out of it. I would hate to see you spend decent dough on good kit only to find that it doesn't fit the recipient.

Can I be your friend.............10K, helluva friend........you won't find a double without sights, it just ain't gonna happen. When you say NO 2 lug guns can you be more forthcoming.........like what 3 or 6 or 9.........? You're going to likely have to have a special rifle built if you want a high end rifle with a DM, that just just isn't how normal high end rifles are built. You'll likely want to start with a new style Sako with the 3 lugs or a Mark V Wby and have something built up from there. 280, 270, 30-06, 366 Wagner, 35 Whelen, what's your caliber and cartridge requirements? Most doubles now a days are magnums of one sort or another whether they say so or not. 9.3X74R, 375 flanged or H&H, there are always 45-70s out there in Sabatti doubles, definitely not a magnum. Is this to be a hunting rifle or more a keepsake? So many unanswered questions..................
Scopes........forget Nightforce and all that knob twisting, lit reticle, rangefinding junk out there and go with a Zeiss Diavari 2.5-10 with duplex cross hairs. Probably one of the finest, simplest scopes on the market and truly befitting a high end rifle. I have used Zeiss for years and have a few of them and there just is no downside to a Zeiss scope. They have the finest glass bar none on the market today, I'm not talking the low end Zeiss, I'm talking the Diavari series........1500 bucks and up............

For 10K including a $2K Zeiss scope, you could pretty much commission a smith to build you whatever it is you want on any action you choose...........

What is the shooting experience of the recipient?
What will the rifle be used for?
Where will it be used?

That said, I have a better offer, I'll be your friend for only a $5,000 rifle. Look at how good I am to you.
/thread.

Your criteria, other than cost, are a little tough.

I think you can match most though: "Google" BlaserUSA and look at the options for the R8 or R93 Bolt Rifles.
No problem re: bolt lock up, detachable mag, fluted barrel and suitable non-magnum calibers. Great scope mounting systems.
Maybe a pair of interchangeable barrels ? Say one in 6.5x55, 270 or 30-06 and one in 9.3x62 ?

Drillings & double rifles are hardly the way to go for a new hunter and will easily take you past budget even
without a good scope mounted.

As to see-through mounts ... I hope you're pulling our leg ! That's like mounting a snow plow on a Ferrari.
No self-respecting rifle aficionado would be caught dead with such a thing. Ewwww !!!

A Steyr Mannlicher Classic in 6.5x68 or 8x68S (neither round is "belted" ...which I presume meets the non-"magnum" requirement) I think the polished hammer twists on the barrel exterior is/are a lot nicer than any "flutes" .. all other criteria I think are met .. and will be pricey with a Zeiss Diavari scope (or two) if you also use EAW mounts. Also guaranteed to raise eyebrows when the brand new shooter and owner shows up at the range to zero it! .. Get the full stock version in 6.5x55 if he would like sights!

no 2 locking lug bolts

The Barrett M99/M95 has 15 locking lugs! And it's a .50 BMG, not a .50 BMG magnum;)
You'll have enough left in your budget for a top end Nightforce/Leupold/Vortex or whatever optic you want.
Also available in .416 Barrett if he's only planning on hunting gophers!
M95 has the drop mag, M99 is single shot, both are available with a fluted barrel option. You could always put iron sights on 45° offset mounts and rock it C.O.D. style if you can't find see-thru mounts.

Is there an emoticon for sarcasm?

over 40 years, will be used for hunting all north american game. He is only new to hunting on this continent.

Scope on the drilling is off the table, rifle alone can go over 10k with high quality wood, engraving, transit case, etc.

Why is this thread not on the EE?
On the EE the guessing game would require more substance in order to be taken seriously.
Perhaps Brian could use his expertise to describe this rifle in detail. Every possibility has another twist thrown in.
Keeping in mind that "Under $10,000" could also be "$1,000".
Too much in the descriptors would suggest it could be a custom rifle or extend the EE to Europe.

Too bad this thread is not subject to "call block"!
