Help me select an ultra budget marksman rifle

rem 783, barrel length is your choice. Mystic Precision can get PTG bottom metal that will take AICS mags (may need gunsmith to install) as well as Boyds stocks. Lost of companies offer prefit barrels. J.C. Custom Barrels (canadian company with get reviews) has them listed at $535.

I kind of understand the draw of the Remington 783, being so cheap.. But if you plan on building a precision rifle you may as well invest the extra couple hundred bucks to start off with to get a nice action..

Personally, I'd get a t3x in 6.5 Creed. It will shoot lights out stock, and when funds allow you can put it into an MDT chassis. The triggers are excellent, the action is glassy smooth. The MDT chassis takes standard AICS mags, which you can get in 5, 10 or 12 round varieties which MDT makes also.

I have a t3x Varmint in the ESS chassis. Stock barrel and trigger, but it shoots like a laser and there is no reason for me to upgrade..

Take a gander through the "Show me your factory tikka groups" thread on here if you have any doubts.. These guns are tack drivers.

Or you can also go with the Oryx, 530$ ish Canadian and you just need to add a magazine!

Whats your budget than?

You could also look for a 788 with a good bore in 222, would probably meet your MOA requirements for around $500.

Howa has their full chassis stocked longer barrel rifle models in 6.5CM that would meet all your requirements, the 783 is easier to swap barrels and build up, but in the long run spending money for a completed rifle will be cheaper, but if your looking for a project buildup, the 783 is probably gonna be your huckleberry.

I like to experiment with things, hence the Ikea approach instead of buying a complete solution off the shelf.
Will have a closer look at 783 HB 16.5 vs 24 in store on the weekend. The rest can wait until Black Friday deals. Optics probably next year - I have a spare 4.5-14 Burris that should do for now.

Ran a few calculations yesterday - looks like 24" barrel in 223 could be another option?

Prophet river got the rem 700 ADL for 499. ( the action alone is worth that)
You can upgrade as you want to.

had a chance to play with a new gen HB 24" 6.5CM with the large bolt knob, pic rail and plastic stock. The action out of the box was way smoother then my 2 originally. It ran very nicely. Trigger was also really crisp with a great pull (I had to adjust mine). Not saying every one is the same but Rem "did" something right with this one.

If you decide on a 223, the Factory 783 mag is one of the best to feed the 223 rem.

I continue to enjoy and compete with the 783. The rifle cost may be inexpensive but the build quality, materials and design punch WAAAAAYYYY above its price point.

Some load testing with a McGowen prefit match barrel (pretty much any spec is possible for little money).

A good start to testing at 185yds.

Reaching out to 1320yds.

A warmer day reaching out to 1400+yds.

PT&G DBM is a pretty easy install in a Boyds stock.. (note I don't sell either product)

And a couple of MDT options.

Oryx chassis is an other option.

YMMV

I would lean towards a Savage 10tr, personally. Mine is easily better than MOA with my hand loads, tested out to about 800 yards. Was a great shooter in its factory stock, and even better in the Cadex chassis it sits in now. I looked at a783 heavy barrel shorty last fall and for a few bucks more went with the 700 AAC SD instead as it was a much nicer rifle.it sits in a MDTLss now, just have to work up a load for it now

I have the 783 hb 16.5" 223. Very accurate rifle. Often less than half moa at 100 yards with sierra game kings. Havent loaded any match grade bullets yet as its a coyote rifle
