Okay say I have an extra $1000.00 bucks or so lying around, and say I am getting married next week and want to spend "my money" before she does.

What to buy, I want a varmit/tactical/gopher gun. I am looking at either a .223 or a .22-250. I have not spent alot of time with either caliber.

I want somthing that is fairly cheap to shoot, I want somthing that will reach out to 600 yards for shooting targets. and of course punch tiny 3/5 shot groups @ 100 + yards.

I am partial to remys, but own a couple of savages, sako browning and win.
So i have no fav's .
The grand does not inclued glass. I have a scope already.

So help me .223 or .22-250 ???

Rem, tikka savage????
thanks for any help

That's the best advice anyone could give :D

Too true! My son had $1000 and he bought a 257 wthby. If I had $1000 I ain't saying what i would buy becuase i don't have $1000 and I honestly can't believe nobodies bought the gun i've been eyeballing so there's no reason to draw attention to it.

Hmm, which one would that be...? ;)

I would go with .223Rem to start with. It is more forgiving then 22-250 on barrel and more plesent to shot and cheaper either to buy ammo or reload.
As for rifle there is so much to choose from, however I will go with
Model 700™ VSF, which will cost you bit over 1000, but has plenty futures you will be happy with.

26" heavy contour barrel (0.820" Muzzle O.D.) for the ultimate in long-range accuracy
Concave target-style barrel crown

H.S. precision stock features full-length aluminum bedding blocks for enhanced stability and shot-to-shot consistency

Six longitudinal flutes reduce barrel weight and increase heat dissipation

Tactical style dual front swivel stud system for convenient mounting of Bi-pod and Sling

While 223 is nice, he does want to shoot long range and the 22-250 will give him an extra 100-200 yds. You can still do it with .223 but you will lose sgnificantly more energy and velocity.

Yep, but he wants to shoot at gopher, I guess hitting that creature with 50-55grain bullets at 500-600yr will be enough to kill it.
I understand that he is new to shooting long range, so he would have to learn how to be efficient at longer range reading wind, leaning bullet drop, velocities, using scope, bipod and everything else).
22-250 will smoke the barrel before he can do it at longer range and .223Rem will still run for another 2-3000 rounds.

Greetings

Yup... Tikka Varminter in 22-250... best out of box shooter for under a $1000.00. I have never seen one yet that would not shoot Sub MOA... and I certainly can't say that about the Savages or the Remingtons.
I have shot them all.

Buy TWO used guns, one in .223 if you must, and one in .22-250. No need to buy a new gun to get a great shooter, and for a great value.

.............I spent 33 years up in the Fort. Nary a gopher to be seen!!!???

...........Best purchase i made this year was a stainless Vanguard in .257 Weatherby. Its a lazer beam. 25 cal is a little big for those imaginary Fort Mac gophers you have been seein though.:D Next you'll be lookin for a Pink Elephant gun!!:D
