Hi Everyone,

I recently joined a club which offers trap shooting. I think I've narrowed down the gun search to either a Browning 725 or Browning XT. Which Browning would you recommend for trap shooting? I am open to other guns as well.

Thanks in advance for your help with the decision
D

Honestly which ever one fits better. I handled both and preferred the 725 trap. Have you looked at the beretta 686 series? If the Brownings don't fit chances are the beretta will fit you better.

The question you're asking is very similar to "which of these two shades of blue are more bluer?" And Noob has the right answer, fit matters more than anything else.

My buddy bought a 725 a while ago. I am not a Browning guy, but that gun is the nicest, lowest felt recoil shotgun I have ever shot. It is a really, really nice gun.
BUT, he has had problems with it. First was a bent (or broken, can't remember) firing pin. Also the opening lever was "catchy". He had it opened up and the pin was fixed and the lever was smoothed out somewhat.
There is another person at our club, same gun, same problem, who sent it to Browning... it took over a year for them to send it back, but I believe it's shooting fine now.
Don't mean to scare you off, but ask around before you decide.
As long as there are no inherent problems, I agree that fit is everything.
I have never shot a XT, so I won't speak for or against that one... C.

We have at least seven 725s being used at our club, two that I own, and so far, not an issue with any of them. I also owned an XT, and it was also trouble free.

I've owned a 725 sporting clays and a 725 skeet. The first was so nice that I bought the second (to have a straighter stock), and I considered buying a 725 trap too.

However, a very experienced fellow shooter I know bought a 725 trap and found that it was defective -- to make a long story short, it was eventually proven to shoot dramatically off-center. Unusable. When the gun and a report was submitted to Browning by the shooter and by the retail store that sold it to him, Browning responded that they there were willing to tolerate that level of error in their products. So much for my colleague's $$$. After that, I shelved my thoughts of buying a 725 trap.

Conversely, though I've never owned an XT, I've never heard anything but good things about them. Hope this helps.

There have been some issues at our club with 725's. Short firing pins (fail to fire), ejector problems and poor warranty service and poor parts availability. The Browning story for the last 25 years. I don't think they are overly committed to the Canadian market. Sales maybe, customer service not so much.

Have a good look at the berettas. They handle remarkably different, once you compare the two then you narrow it down further.

For my money if it was for trap and not expected to be a gun for other games my money would be on the one with the highest rib and the most stock fit adjustability. I shoot an XT myself with a factory installed adjustable comb and Gracoil. There is infinite fit ability with it.
Where are you located? If you are close to Lloyd you are welcome to try mine.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I am alarmed by the issues with the 725. I will check out Beretta.
Please continue with your recommendations, feedback, links, etc.

Cheers,
D
