Help me understand Scope Mounts

I just ordered my son a Savage Mark II GLY (lefty bolt) for a first .22

Can anyone help me understand what I need to mount a scope on this?

My plan is for something simple (under $150) like a 3-9x32 or maybe even a Red Dot (I really like the Red Dot idea).

I notice the Savage website for this rifle says "Drilled and tapped for scope mounts, open sights" and Cabela's says "Now comes with drilled and tapped receiver. #12 Weaver bases required but not included."

I don't understand the different scope mounting systems or what I should be looking for in the mount/base. Going to the Weaver website didn't really help me much.

Did you search online to see what your required mount looks like yet?

There are several different mount systems about the place, at vastly different price points.

Best is to have a look through a paper catalog or a well laid out online source, and see what the different mounts look like and what the prices are like.

In very basic terms, you screw the mount rail section or sections onto the rifle. They must match the type of rings you wish to use. Rings are chosen based on height, diameter of the scope, and the finish desired. You need rings to mount the scope unless you have a system that is integral to the mount, like the old style side mount scope mounts.

You will need a set of rings. Budget between $10, and $200+ depending on what you decide you need. Since you probably are NOT putting a Leupold Mk4 on it, start shopping at the lower end of the scale.

Lots of choices. From there, your call!

Enjoy!

Crappy picture to try and figure that out from, for sure.

You need two of those #12 mounts, eh. Just sayin'. Gonna be one for each scope ring.

Have them ship the bases with the rifle at the same time get matching rings and a scope maybe they can mount and bore sight before shipping.

Go on Cabelas.ca and look under the mounts and bases section. There are several weaver types but only one type in inventory the is #12. Or better yet call Cabelas and tell them what your looking for. (Weaver #12 bases) hope this helps.
