help me understand the legalities of shortening a barrel

If you're/who ever's into firearms, & can't 'shorten' their own barrel, within legal specifications, esp. a shotgun, well lol.
Why would I have, or anyone with a couple brain cells, need to 'find' someone to cut/touch my/their rifle, to do an ez laymans job..?.
+ Do you comprehend well? You are saying/arguing your point, but saying the exact same thing I did,{& others!} but dense :) lol Mehh~ Have a Good day!
Says the guy that diverted the rifle conversation to shotguns... "Laymans" job, layman's results... go for 17.999" Layman. Good luck with that. Get out your hacksaw and grinder... let the sparks fly. LOL.

So, is that inner part, part of the barrels measurement? If one wants to shorten their 500 barrel to 18", on the outside it would {only} be 17.25", as per the extra part that goes beyond what you can see, into the receiver{is 3/4"}...

Is this correct? 🤷‍♂️
The official way to measure barrel length is down the bore to the bolt face on a closed bolt, so the extension gets included however it is involved with the closed action. If the bolt locks into that extension then you lose that length when measured down the bore.

A question - is the method of measuring barrel length above actually defined anywhere in legislation or regulation? I don't think I've seen it anywhere, but it is considered gospel in everything I have read.

The RCMP has it listed how they measure barrels.

Revolvers are not measured the same as other guns, the chamber is not included with a revolver.
