Since the CPC got in, I've been saying that as soon as the registry is gone, I will purchase a quality, lightweight hunting rifle. I have a couple already (Rem 700, M70), but this one will have special meaning to me.

Criteria: Synthetic stock, stainless, short action, lightweight with a cost of no more then $2000. This rifle will be used in the field as my spot and stalk rifle.

Of course, a Kimber Montana in .308 would be the obvious choice, but what other rifles should I consider?

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I'll have to have a look at one. I like the idea of the .260 with a shorter barrel. While trying a new caliber is never a bad idea, I'm set up nicely for .308, so I'd lean that way I think.

Any other suggestions?

I'd be looking for a well preserved Brno 21H or 21F in 7x57. IMHO, the best lightweight sporter ever made.

If only...

Buy the Sako. When I 'settle' I end up flipping it later at a loss to get the one I really want. Might as well buy it first.

Sound advice there.

If the gun laws were changed the way they ought to be changed, then a FN FAL would be the immediate choice.

You mean eliminated, right? There would be nothing wrong with the law being completely silent on firearms. It would be a refreshing change from opressive government over-regulation.

I dream that they will allow most of the restricted rifles to be carried the way we do our bolts and levers and pumps. In this dream I carry a super accurate AR out coyote hunting and another in 6.8SPC for deer. Then my old lady smacks me awake and tells me to get after the yard work.
