Question to Mosin-Nagant experts.
picked up a 1939 Izhevsk Round Receiver yesterday, trying to put in on "safe" as i saw on YouTube videos by pulling the back of the bolt to the back then twist it left, it won't set on that position and it just goes back to original position.

any help or guidance would be appreciated.

They are brutal to use. Try pulling it back as much as possible then to the left a bit. Mine would stay at a half way point. Then reset and pull it again back as far as possible and finish the turn to the left.

Yes its brutal to use. Below shows the best method of using a mosin safety

Pull harder back?

I never use it. I just lift the bolt handle if I need to put it on safe.

What all these guys said.
Pull on the knob only, and I do mean pull.
Puyll like a son of a b**** and then turn.

But,,, should you let go on the cocking piece, will the cocking piece now fly forward and fire the action?

Best bet is simply to open the bolt or to unload if in doubt

thanks for all responses,

my concern isn't as much as "needing" the safety on a rifle, the army taught me good "trigger discipline", finger is always outside trigger guard until eye is on sight on target and ready to shoot, and i don't load the rifle until im on the shooting bench or ready to fire.

my concern was that maybe something was wrong with the rifle or bolt thats possibly malfunctioning other than not going on safe, but i guess this is a common occurrence with Mosins?? not too worried about not having "safety" as much as the possibility of that might be a hint for other problem.
i haven't fired the rifle yet, i'll be tearing it apart, inspecting and cleaning all parts and will take it to the range sometime next week hopefully before im shipped away for a month.

It's common for these to be tough to get the safety on. Like other guys have said, it's safer to not try to put it on and just practice safe shooting procedures.

Im going to play with the safety on my mosin's next time I go to the range. See how practical it is to use. I always felt like I could set off the primer dropping the safety on a mosin too fast. I'm curious if I can actually set the gun off letting the safety off quickly or having it slide out of my fingers. This will be my test to see if I will ever practically use it or just leave it as an optional feature.

So you're saying that it will jump the sear/trigger spring when it's already in the cocked position, if dropped from the already cocked position?

You are correct. It will just catch on the sear. Unless the trigger is pulled at the same time or somebody's f'd with the sear.
