Hi!

I need help for my first and only shotgun I plan to buy in my life. Please I want true advise here, no fanboy ''this is da best shotgun ever'' comments.

I want to buy an all around 3' chambered 12 ga shotgun for both small game and home defense, synthetic stock. I used to look over the SuperNova but the price have gone sky rocket so I'm more around the 870 or a mossberg.

I have only shot the 870 and it was in the military. Never used the Mossberg but I heard good things about it.

I don't know the difference between the 870 and the 590 beside the safety. So please help me out with your experience with both my friends!

Cheers in advance!

ps: Budget 500$ MAX

small game and home defense are two very different shotguns. If you want to use a tactical shotgun for game, you better buy a remington because the Mossbergs tacticals usually aren't threaded for chokes as far as I know.

I bought a Mossberg 500, 3 barrel last summer, specifically for hunting, and with those barrels does. I have used it a lot, no issues, and I agree with a previou post, I think that home defence is a different requirement, (Norinco 12.5 in.) But up to you and your budget.

if you're looking for quality of the gun, i like my 870 more than my mossberg.
if you're looking to hunt and home defense you may as well have two guns
also if you think you are going to buy the "only shotgun I plan to buy in my life" then you should probably save your cash and buy something truly badass

If you are going to buy a shotgun and home defense is one of the reasons you should probably choose the gun you are already familiar with. If I were you I would buy an older 870 with a 2 3/4" chamber and replace the wood with a new set of sythetics if you really want to...personally I prefer the wood furniture. Also buy an extra older barrel and have it cut to 18.5" for HD purposes. When it is all said and done you'll have the best shotgun you could ever ask for and still be well under budget!

Go down to your local gun emporium. Select the shotguns you are interested in. Pick them up one at a time, close your eyes and shoulder them like your gonna fire. When you open your eyes, you should clearly see which one is the better fit for you. When I shoulder an 870 it drops right into place and I'm looking right down the barrel. When I do the same with a mossberg pump the barrel is always pointed high and I have to correct.
Both guns are pretty reliable and around the same price. Go by how the gun fits you personally and you'll be happier in the end. If this is going to be your go to all around do everything bangstick, I would suggest a two barrel combo. 28" for the birds and squirrels with choke tubes and a 18" improved cylinder for your security and general blowing up of old detergent jug needs.
Cheers

Mossberg 500 two barrel synthetic combo listed at Cabelas for $319. An 870 express goes for about $350, there are two barrel deals for these at times too. A second barrel was under $200 last time I ordered one. Should still come in around your $500 price point.
Another point, if your looking for something a little tacticool there are a million and a half accessories for both these guns. You can start with a cheaper model and add/interchange things as you like. My 870 wears a 7 shot magazine extension and a folding pistol grip stock at times.

From general discussions on da internets, word is that Remington has gone significantly downhill in terms of the QC. That being said, if you want that classic Remington quality, im told that your best option is to buy an 870P. This is all well and good, but that goes way over your budget. For your purposes, if you don't care about pistol grip vs. traditional, i would go with the mossberg. They are relatively cheap and if you get the 590A1, you get a gun that passed the US torture trials (or something along those lines). So you got the tacti-cool stuff right there.

If it were me, I would shell out a little bit more and get the 590A1 (SPX if you can find it). You'll love it.

The Mossberg is easier to repair if it breaks, a bit more durable than the 870, too. The older 870's are pretty good, don't have a very high opinion of newer ones. They are waaay overpriced, in my opinion. You might also consider a Maverick 88, they are dirt cheap and reliable. You won't mind if it gets scratched, and won't cry if it falls out of the canoe.
