help my m1 carbine is a bolt action ???

ok i have this excellent condition m1 carbine that wont work in semi

using 3 diffrent mags and 2 brand of factory ammo fiering the gun will produce 1 of 2 result

80 % of the time the gun will cycle and eject the empthy but not pick-up a new cartridge from the mag, racking the bolt will take the new cartridge so its basicly a straigt pull gun

20% of the time it will pick up the cartridge but it will jam with the new cartridge pointed nose first in the gun and the end up in the blot .

simple clearing of the stopage will work



i dont know what to do i love the thing its fast and light but its not working as it should

It sounds like you have issues with all three mags.

If it cycles and ejects, then it isn't a gas problem.

I would try slightly opening up the front of the feed lips on one of the mags. That should cause the bullet to sit higher and hopefully strip off without going nose down.

I agree with Ripstop - it sounds like the mags. Are they USGI mags, or aftermarket? There should be markings if GI mags. It could also be how the mags were pinned, if there is a rivet that interferes with spring function.

Some pics of the mags might help. Just for sake of being thorough, you also may want to check the gas piston and make sure it moves freely.

Just a thought, but is it possible that the bolt isn't cycling fully? Just enough to eject the spent casing but not enough to pick up the next one from the mag?
The reason I ask is because it seems too coincidental that all 3 mags are doing this.
Also, he mentioned that if he cycles the action by hand, it will feed a new round with no issues.
My thoughts are that there may be a small blockage or dirt in the gas system.
Mine has done this (failure to feed) when it gets dirty.

mine used to jam every third round...bang, bang, jam. Round half out of the mag or almost out and jammed crooked. It suk'd.


Never actually fixed it...lol. It's been it storage for 20 years...maybe I should clean it up....hahahah

I would definatley give it a super clean

It sounds like underpowered ammo to me. Were they reloads? You might want to disassemble the gas plug and piston & clean the crap out of that area. Might be choking off the back-thrust on the slide.

pull the gas plug and piston likely lots of carbon

you need the special wrench DO NOT try without it you will wreck the gas plug

also are you greaseing the gun for lube?

the m1 garand,carbine and m14 were greases not oiled

mine did that once, had the mag apart to clean & put the mag spring in backwards..caused the rounds to nose dive into the feed ramp
