I just got a chance today to bring my new never fired SKS type 5 6I picked up from Frontier 3 weeks ago to the range

When I got there, the RSO was there and there is a single shot rule for rifles. So after a bit of fooling around with the floorplate and such, I just put the round straight in the chamber, and closed the bolt by opening up the magazine. At this point I figured the round was in the chamber, so I tried to shoot it. Click. Carefully open up the action, and the round ejects no problem. No indent on the primer from the firing pin. Tried it again, same result.

So, figuring I put it together wrong after I stripped it right down to clean off the cosmoline, I took it apart at the range, just to the bolt level. I remembered that I was warned to not put the firing pin in upside down, so I took the bolt apart and twisted the pin 180 degrees, but left it in the bolt (after knocking out that pin that holds the firing pin in). Then I put the bolt back together, put the action back together, and tried again.

No Dice!!!!!

Help me! I followed the instructions posted on www.surplusrifle.com on taking the gun apart, and it went smooth, I don't think I made a mistake, this isn't my first gun, but it is my first SKS.

Is it maybe a defective gun?

yeah, it went click like a dry fire, no matter which way the firing pin was in. no indentation on the primer. the action cycles normally, safety works, etc. I didn't take apart the trigger assembly, just soaked in brake cleaner and lightly oiled it.

put a tiny dab o grease on the back of the firing pin and dry fire, now check to see if the hamer hit the pin by looking at the grease,if yes take spring of pin and check to see how far past the bolt face it pases (together without spring) It should go out somewhere in the 1/16 to 1/8 inch range

I think maybe there is a spring missing on the firing pin.... i gotta look at some schematics of this gun. The only spring on that bolt is the extractor spring. The long pin which goes through the bolt i'm assuming is the firing pin, and there is no spring on that one.

my bolt is just like this one

I think what is happening is the firing pin isn't making it to the primer on the shell. It seems to work normally otherwise, it dry fires, cycles, etc.

where is this gun range that only allows 1 shot? At our range its 5 shots for rifle or hand gun. Might as well bought a single shot cooey.:shotgun:

Dumb suggestion I know - but are you sure the action is closed up all the way? I know on mine if I baby it forward it doesn't close all the way and doesn't fire. I really have to let mine slam closed.

2x on that. When I had an sks I had all sorts of problems when i first got it because I let my hand drag on the bolt when I chambered the first round. Pull her back all the way and let er go!

X3 ... Put the round in the mag itself, preferably use a stripper clip, not the chamber, than ram it home ...

If you push on the back of the firing pin with your finger can you see the tip of it protruding through the bolt face?

firstly, check the bolt, see pin protruding on the front of bolt and then rattle it , it should rattle freely, the pin only moves 1/8" (no spring needed).

if the bolt is OK then you want to know if the hammer is hitting it.

secondly, remove top cover and the main spring, leave them out and let the mag down , insert the bolt on the carrier and slide it all the way forward , you will see the bolt drop pushing down on the sear disconnect and then test fire, watch the hammer hit the firing pin. still not sure the firing pin moved? then do it again without the carrier but you need to depress the middle of bolt with your left thumb , use a felt pen and mark the firing pin when its in most rearward postion and fire again.

if everything seams to be in working order then perhaps you didnt slam the carrier forward hard enuff at the range.

please do your safety check.

next time at the range dont drop the mag , instead load one round into the mag , pull carrier back and let her fly .:D

Ok, I'm dumb but, how do you use the mag on the sks? I have all the 10rd stripper clips, do you load from the top, and keep the mag closed in the bottom of the gun? I couldn't figure out how the bullets went into the mag, it only holds 5 but the clips hold 10. I was trying to put a bullet in the mag, but that feeder arm is spring loaded above where I assumed the bullets would sit, so it wouldn't feed a single bullet. Is there a link that teaches idiots like me how to use the sks?

I can use semi auto pistols, 10-22s, shotguns and bolt action guns no problem, but this gun is making me feel retarded.

Bullets come out the barrel, cartridges get loaded in the mag.

You have to load the fixed magazine from the top. You can use the stripper to feed 5 into the mag or load them individually.

ok, so here's my problem then. If I have the mag closed in the gun, and I insert a cartridge from the top, the bolt carrier doesn't want to snap forward to load the cartridge into the chamber. I try pulling it back, thinking it will snap forward all the way, it doesn't. I tried slamming it hard forward once, (without a cartridge loaded in my garage), and I bruised my hand on the bolt carrier handle without it budging.

So do I have to just smash the #### out of it to make the bolt carrier slide forward then?

If the bolt is locked back, and you have no cartridge sitting in the magazine, it will stay back. Theres a little catch in front of/ below the bolt at the rear of the internal magazine. Hold bolt with right hand and take a screwdriver in left ,start pushing around in there, and you'll see how it releases so the bolt can go forward. Don't use your finger...I hear it hurts ....... If a cartridge is in the internal mag though, it should just release with a pull back and let go.

ahhh, there we go.. this is starting to make more sence. If you just put a round into the chamber then the bolt will obviously not slide forwards, as it locks back. There needs to be one in the mag. Be very careful about chambering a round first on these rifles, as if you have a sticky firing pin and let her rip forwards your rifle may fire before the chamber is sealed...

Ranges such as 1 shot or 5 shot should be banned by the shooting community, we have enough trouble with the lieberals.

as far as no go boom - its usually dirt or grease preventing the pin protrusion, if not the pin isnt long enough
