HELP! My reference answered "self defense" in RPAL interview

Hi everyone, I'm applying for a Restricted PAL, the RCMP called me and asked that what's my purpose using a restricted firearm, I answered" for target practice", which is reasonable.
But on the other hand, when they called my reference and asked him the same question, he doesn't know how to answer it, so he said "for self defense".

When he told me that, I'm really afraid that the RCMP would reject my application on that ground, would they?

This thing bothers me a lot, because I want my Restricted PAL so badly, I don't want to be rejected.

Every comment is appreciated

Why would the RCMP ask your ref. such a question in the first place. Your Ref. has no idea why you want a restricted weapon anyway, unless he's a mind reader!!

I hope they call me as reference for my brother in-law, when they ask if he could be violent ill tell them he'll kill people for a small charge. Just to see what they say. he's in the military.
To the OP I doubt your references answer will affect your license. although self defense is taboo in the eyes of the RCMP it is still a legal act.

Not much you can do now but wait and see. It's possible the CFC will take the reference with a grain of salt, considering I'm sure they hear asinine answers all day long from references.

This kind of thing is not uncommon it seems. We get a few threads here about people worried about references. There's kind of a lesson here. Choose your references carefully. I once lost the job of a lifetime due to a poorly chosen reference with a glib attitude. 20 years ago and I still hold it against him. :)

Because the asinine laws, regulations, and policies in this country encourage many people to lie and say they are interested in target shooting when in fact what they really want is to protect the lives of the people rightfully and peacefully in their home.

The bull$hit is two-sided: the govt pretends that the question is necessary to protect public safety and some applicants pretend that they want to shoot target pistols instead of service-type pistols and semi-automatic rifles.

Go to any of the sponsors' websites and see how many of them stock true target shooting pistols: S&W model 41s, High-Standards, Hammerlis, Walther GSPs. How many of them stock Feinwerkbau or Anschutz target rifles? Compare that to the number who stock S&W M&Ps, Glocks, Sigs, AR15s, or SKSs.

If everybody who wanted a restricted was really into target shooting, then there would be more high quality target pistols on the market.

Why on earth would you need to coach a reference??

Because its on their list of questions. Your reference should either be upfront and say, "I wouldn't want to speculate" or lie, "he wants it for target shooting".

facepalm

acquiring a firearm for self defense is not permitted if you cannot prove (with unobtainable documents) that your life is in immediate danger and that the police alone cannot protect you.

Only 2 "purposes" for everyday ordinary people are permitted : target shooting or collecting.

They wouldn't ask for references if their answers didn't matter. I believe there is a risk the RCMP might give the OP a hard time because of that answer. maybe, maybe not.

Wow, that sucks. I do feel your pain though. I was just retarded enough to use my CRAZY MOTHER-IN-LAW as one of my references. LOL. After they called her, (mine is not a "gun owning family), she phoned my dad and said: I just didn't know what to say to all their questions". I had no Idea what she said until I found out it was approved. I bet it won't be a problem for you. If they approved mine after talking to her, you should be fine.

Possible OP Fail!..... ?

c'mon seriously?

My thoughts exactly. A Lieberal troll just looking for someone to say "we don't really want them for target shooting, but for self defense so we lie and say target practice"; I hope no one said anything like that. I for one have my restricted guns for target practice. I can't afford some of those expensive target specific guns, but I have fun target shooting with my M&P, and PX4, and AR-15 etc.. All guns make excellent target practice guns. I have never met a gun I didn't like, can't say the same about people.

Re Bigbinks: That's joke but I'm glad to see you got your license successfully, congraz!
Re Winchester II: yea I'm totally new to this forum, a freshman lol, and I really like here because so many ppl reply my thread and give me helpful informations, I want to get my RPAL so bad because I really do enjoy target sport, and I will grow up here by reading plenty of useful posts, I will learn alot to improve myself to be a good and safe shooter... Thank you for all you guys comments!!!

No one will throw your application based on merely one wrong answer , although people are told to talk to your references prior to receiving a call . Now if your ref. has not answer that this guy is a rambo in making and will try to take over USA or jack a plane , there should not be much to rant about. In case they deny it then you get the reason written on the letter and deal with it accordingly - Biggs

At least they know you never coached your reference.Plus they most likely just want to know if you reference is even alive and that you check out as normal. Funny when I got my RPAL they never contacted my references.

Stop the lying. Nothing will change until everybody involved stops lying.

When the govt says they need to hear from two people (who might be complete strangers to you or even felons) to determine that you're not a danger, they're lying. They are trying to raise the bar to make it more difficult to get a RPAL.

When they say that target shooting & collecting are the only legitimate purposes for owning a restricted firearm, they're lying.

Those people who apply for an RPAL who don't want to shoot competitive target sports, but simply want to to enjoy plinking are forced to lie. Those who want to exercise their right to protect their families are forced to lie. For those of you keeping score at home, I was honest when I said I wanted it for target shooting: I enjoy bullseye shooting. No lie. The proof? I have a target pistol, not a service pistol.

When you say that you can't afford one of those fancy target guns but you have a PX4, you're lying. Your PX4 is more expensive than any High Standard. You can get most of the HS lineup with a red dot scope (and an unnecessary trigger job) for less than the cost of your PX4. And centerfire is WAY more expensive to shoot than rimfire.

Eventually, those lies will come back to bite us. Its all too easy for a govt to say, "well, you want to shoot targets, no need for service pistols or semiauto rifles to be legal anymore."

Well... according to the regulations we ARE allowed to own... and to have no other reason to own a restricted firearm than "just because".

"...as part of a gun collection..."

A legitimate answer should be "I enjoy firearms and want to add a Glock to my safe. And when I shoot it, it will be at a range shooting targets." In fact according to the regs we NEVER even have to fire them. Hoarding is ok.

Anyone feeling the pressure/requirement to own a restricted firearm for competitive shooting only, is falling prey to the antis. The rules and regulations don't require it.
