Hey fellas,
I had my wife in the local shop a couple days ago fondling a bunch of guns and she has narrowed it down to two (albeit very different) guns by feel and I was wondering if you guys with much more experience than either of us could help us lean one way or another. She liked the Smith and Wesson M&P9 ($680) how light it was, and how easily she could control it and cycle the action. She also liked the IWI Jericho 941 ($700), mostly because of how soft the trigger was, however I attribute that to it being a dual action (is that accurate?). She didn't really like how heavy it was and found that the action was a little harder to manipulate, however the salesman told her that she might like the reduced recoil of the heavier gun when it came to shooting it, which makes sense.

The shop also has a range with a variety of guns to rent, however they only have an M&P in .40 cal, and don't have a Jericho at all, so we can't really get an apples to apples comparison and shoot both options. Both guns come with a range kit which includes 3 mags, a holster, and some sort of pouch.

My wife has a pretty medium build, 5'6" 120lbs ish, so she's not big but not petite either, she's in good shape. This would be her first gun so that is something to take into consideration as well. In your experience which gun would you figure she would enjoy most in the long run? It would mostly just be a range toy, but ultimately, God forbid, it would need to be something that she could protect herself with at home since I work away a lot. Thanks for your time fellas, and I apologize for the long winded post.

What about a Ruger SR9? I bought one of these because I have smaller hands and the grip is thin. Love the gun and love the price, I got the brushed metal version for $479 from Wholesale Sports... great deal

The M&P is a solid choice. Get a Glock if she ends up liking the polymer frame. If your wife doesn't mind the weight of a steel frame, check out a Girsan Regard in the compact model. 9mm is a ton of fun!

Both are great guns as I have them in .45 and also the m&p in 9mm. I would strongly suggest the m&p as it can fit any size hand with the supplied backstraps. It's a light gun and handles fantastic. Go on EE and find something used to save a few bucks, I paid around $550 shipped for the range kit. You won't regret either gun. The cz75 feels just like the jericho as well.

Jericho is nice but its a cz clone why not get the real thing its only a little Bit more money. Now with that said that polymer frame Jericho is pretty sweet but I always liked the sp01 phantom a little more but unfortunately its no longer in production. Take a look at a CZ75 P-07 and CZ75 P-09 there worth considering and in the same price range.

Hope any of my rambling helps

Cheers

CZ (Shadow) etc would be my choice as it has a fine trigger / good sights and won't jump around like lighter guns (Wife's choice as well)

Wow thanks for all the replies fellas, I really appreciate it. She tried a Glock 17 but didnt like how the grip felt in her hands. The shop we were at didnt have a cz75, another shop only has a B model but it was like 1100 which is out of our price range. I'll keep my eyes open for one though. She actually peferred the regular mp9 vs the julie goloski model. Thanks for all your help, and keep the wisdom coming.

The CZ will be more accurate for a novice shooter with a better sight radius and trigger - the M&P will be lighter and let her shoot longer without tiring but may not give the best accuracy for a new shooter as the trigger takes a bit to master.
my 2 cents

Stay away from DA/SA imo and go with a striker fire DA or a hammer fire SA only.

My top 3 female pistols would be

-Walther PPQ
-CZ75 SA
-S&W M&P

I wouldn't recommend the Glock. The grips are a bit thick and it's pretty snappy. The M&P is better. I haven't shot the CZ but I handled it and it seems like it would be good. I just bought one but haven't got it yet.
