Hello all,

I live near the keswick area and i am new to hunting. I am not one of these fortunite few who live on farms and can hunt when ever they want. is there anywhere/anyone who can help with my issue?

I would love to be able to help a farmer our with some coyot or gopher problems so i can hunt deer/turkey on there property. Does this kind of trade off exist anymore?

Get ready to be flamed for that one I think.

Most farms in southern ontario do not have many if any, groundhogs anymore. And the average hunter can't kill enough, if any coyotes, to make a difference.

As mentioned, start knocking on doors but expect to have to knock on quite a few. Lots of other hunters out there.

I think we are getting closer to closer to having to pay for land access to hunt.

All depends how you approach the landowner. I know a few fellows who let me hunt who charge city folks for every trip, but let me and my partners use the property whenever we want because we are good stewards.

Best thing to do is show up to ask for permission in a pick-up and be able to carry a reasonable conversation about crops, weather and politics.

Fill your truck up with gas, drive around and look for animals/birds, knock on doors, repeat until you have a couple of places to hunt. Do you think coming on the internet and asking hunters to give you their spots that they have worked hard for, drove many miles and put in countless hours scouting in just to hand them over to you??? Come on!!!!! Man am I sick of these jokers!!

You can also try contacting your local OFAH chapter. They may be able to set you up with someone with hunting experience. It's worth a try.

Delta Waterfowl has a 'First Hunt' mentoring program. I did it last year, and it was great. They also have events to teach people about waterfowl hunting. Check their website and look for a local chapter.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for all the good advise! I am glad that there are still a healthy ammount of friendly respectible people in the fishing and hunting community. This is why i love the sport because together everyone acheives more.

Hey Rammer~I think you'd have trouble finding gophers in Keswick! I think if you were to ask an area farmer about them, they'd look at you crooked. If you asked about groundhogs maybe, you'd be on the right track. They've been pretty absent from your area for some time, but I've seen a few right in Newmarket and Aurora~but they're safe from everything but BMWs around there. : )

Anyhow, east an NE of you there are a good population of turkeys...I know guys who hunt the area. I'd suggest fueling-up your vehicle, and go on a door-knocking campaign once you get into farm country. Don't go on a Sunday either.

I was looking for hunting spots in Keswick as well, no such luck, everyone was either full of hunters or very much against it

I stopped doing the controlled deer hunt up there as too many hunters claiming to have permission for the same property to hunt. As far as turkey's and coyotes I have a few places to hunt, one in particular took me years for the farmer to finally let me hunt there. Turkeys and coyotes only. There are many deer but they are off limits. The farmers wife likes them. Some farms I share with other hunters and we keep in touch not to step on each others toes.

I would check out the farms out in the area of Zephyr regarding coyotes as they are lousy out there. One guy out there has culled over fifty this winter.

The good ol boys club is really tight knit in the area and very hard to meet someone who can help. for new hunters who want to get into the sport they sure make it hard. I am planning on doing some Duck hunting this year and i am looking to get some people to gether so we have some fun on the water. the more the marrier. I am probably going to be more of a bird hunting a think however; if a dear/moose trip comes my way i have a nice 308 waiting to see the sunlight.

I'm so tired of these threads, everyone just wants do get land the easy way.. Knock on doors... Then knock on some more doors... Then knock on some more doors.. Continue this process for the next 20 years.. And if you find a farmer good enough to give you permission, take care of him with help, meat, visits, Christmas baskets.. Whatever.. Too many people forget the last part after they get permission in my opinion.

Go to some Ontario hunting forums, post "Looking for a buddy to hunt with".

There was a guy on one site inviting people out to hunt, not sure if it was private or public land.

I used to live in Newmarket and hunt in the Georgina area, tough to get permission. Hunted geese with a local that lived on Hwy 48 east of Sutton.
