Hey guys,

I recently purchased an older marlin 81. It seems to have a problem feeding properly, ejection is fine but the round fails to come up from the tube 2/3 of the time...

any ideas, I have included the pics here to show the mecanism...

good idea for the spring!

Also, I was thinking of softening the angle of the middle swivel you see in the pic so it would get shells easier, very lightly of course!

ok, the spring seems to be the problem, how to make it stiffer, can I take a tube apart?

thanks guys

I honestly dont know if the tube can be taken apart easily or not, I would suspect that they can be taken apart for cleaning and such but I have no idea how to go about it.

A post in the gunsmithing forum might get you a quicker answer, but if I have time tonight I will grab one of my tube fed .22s and see if the unit can be disassembled.

Not that what I find on my Marlin lever action .22 would be applicable to the 81, but perhaps theres a chance.

In the mean time, you might have some luck searching the forums at www .rimfirecentral.com (remove the space to make the link work)

to take the tube apart, remove the pin holding the knurled knob at the end of the tube.check to make sure that the "lifter spring" underneath the mag follower is installed properly on either side of the "lifter pin".i personally think it's the follower spring or feed lips.

thanks for the answers guys, I have played with the ''lifter spring'' and i'm quite sure its installed ok... It seems like the lifter could go a little lower though, but can't adjust it to go lower, maybe a light filing?

also took the tube apart and gave it a good cleaning inside! we'll see if that helps...
