Should be a 6.5x55. Its pretty obvious if it is 8mm or not. If you have a 8mm or even a .30 cal around try putting that in the muzzle. If the .30 cal goes in it possibly could be a 8mm (though I would get it checked at that point). If it doesn't go in you likely have a 6.5x55.

A member seen my post and he is bringing over some 6.5x55 ammo tonight. We will see what happens

so I say thanks to all for the help

Looks original military and should be 6.5x55 Swedish but you never know what previous owners may have done. I think a 6.5x55 will fit in an 8x57 chamber so I recommend you take it a gunsmith and you will know without risking life or limb.

I was just reading online about that also

I guess I will be waiting to sell her till I go for a drive

Thanks Nabs

Well he dropped over with the ammo it loads and unloads like it should no hang ups at all. But I am still have the issue of not being 100% sure

That is a Swedish model 1896 originally made in 1900 and converted to a Model 38 short rifle later.

Take a 6.5x55 cartridge and see of the bullet fits into the end of the barrel.

I have never ever heard of one in 8mm Mauser (7.92x57 mm).

Can't find any reference to 7.62x57 cartridge anywhere...is this some kind of a wildcat calibre?

I'm glad you figured out it was actually what it's supposed to be - 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser.

Lothar,
I just looked through this thread. Your friend may have meant "7.92x57mm." Not 7.62. 7.92xx57 is 8mm mauser. J or JS after it means "Infantry" ...(J can be "I" in german). It should be .318 bore and not the older .323.
Yes, there were 6.5x55's converted to 8mm Mauser. Some were war capture's and some had to do with some countries not allowing the civilian population to own military rifles, or at least rifle of that countries official calibers.
Not sure if you were already aware of any of this. It is likely somewhat on the rare side if it is 8mm. Hope this helps...
