Ready to start cranking out some rounds. Have lots of brass, bullets And powder... just unsure about one thing..... when reloading the following calibres, what primers do I use? Small pistol? Magnum pistol? Large pistol primers? Standard rifle primers?

Looking to reload: 9mm .40S&W .38Spl .357Mag .44 Mag .45ACP .223 .308Win

Thanks for your help!!!

Boomer,

You need to buy a reloading manual. I have "Modern Reloading" it lists the primer needed for each cartridge.

9mm : SP
40 S&W :SP
.38 Spl : SP
.357 Mag : SP
.45ACP : LP
.223: SR
.308 : LR

"Modern Reloading" states that you should only use magnum primers for magnum loads.

Frightening, isn't it.

He's in the right place to get sorted though. :)

Saying that though, when I started, it was confusing also because my reload data never said the primer type either. I now have an unused box of 1000 Rem 2 1/2 Large pistol primers I can't use.

I think im gonna use them in 7.62 x 39 for my SKS. I might even use them in some blackpowder .303B rounds I've been planning to make.

I am a little perplexed here.

Been reloading shotshells for years. Been shooting hg & rifle for many years too. Always kept my brass with the intention of reloading.

Got a dillon 550B with multiple heads & dies for most of my calibres. A lot of the shotshell powder works up into good loads for pistol (and yes, I am aware that it is not the best for all calibres and yes, I know that rifle uses different powder.) I have scales, tumbler and media. Again all bought with the intention of reloading. Along the way there was University, work , more work , a house w/ renovations, marriage and a new born. No one in my vacinity has offered to help / show me although I hinted many times at both clubs I belong too so I am learning as I go on my own. I have read several manuals and reloading how toos but none specifically mentioned the primer size for those rounds. I have googled the issue and found most of the answers. CGN has added more info... like the .45ACP having both size pistol primers.

Now I am ready to start reloading my brass! Doesn't really seem that perplexing to me. Hoping to have a perfect reloading record like you.. no mistakes at all :dancingbanana: ;)

Regards,

Some powders used for reloading pistol are harder to ignite and require a hotter flame such as H110/ww296.....the faster burning powders usually do not require a Mag. primer.....that is why you should follow the primer recommendations in reloading manuals as they have pressure tested their loads!!

With regards to the .308, depending what the loads are for -

A - you may want match primers for match ammo
B - you may want hard primers for gas guns
C - you may want magnum primers for use in extremely cold weather
D - you may want magnum primers if your powder load exceeds 50 grains.
