I bought a M1 carbine back in the summer, that the gas piston has been welded at some point, to make it non restricted. Found out it's not what I was looking for and want to sell it. But before I do try to sell it, the weld job on the piston is questionable, and want to make sure it's done right. Would somone have a picture of there welded piston that they know has been "approved" at some point. That way I can make sure mine is done right before I try and sell it, thanks.

Wow. Screwing a historical firearm to make it a non-resticted gun? Count me in!

Can it be returned to it's normal state? It can still be non-restricted with a longer barrel.

These were jimmied up in a number of ways so it would be tough to say. The rifle has good value as a basis for restoration to it's original military semi-auto configuration. Chances are the welding on the piston/gas nut/gas cylinder has ruined any possibility to salvaging the original barrel with a semi-auto capability. You might be best to sell it as it is and let someone else take on a project of swapping in a replacement barrel as either a restricted or non-restricted piece depending on the replacement barrel length.

Like I said, it was bought this way, and I have heard of a fact sheet of how the RCMP wanted it done, I just want to make sure seeing how its already jimmied, that it was jimmied in a way that is legal and doesn't come back to bite me.

to my knowledge-M-1 carbines are restricted by name-no matter the operating function-due to their 18" barrel and usage in 1980's Quebec bank robberies...
