Help on a first time shotgun

used shotguns

There are lots of good used shotguns, but they don't all have the proper choke to shoot steel shot,
which you need if you want to hunt waterfowl, so that is something to watch for. Also, I would stay with
12 gauge, because shells are more available, and often cheaper.

I have a Hatsan Marinegaurd that I love. I like the feel and the fact the receiver is made if aluminum so it's very light and the receiver is also taller than the 870 and 500. Looks beefier and more proportionate IMO.

Many people have been pleased with the latest Hatsan shotguns.

I would also look at the Maverick 88 combo, which comes with both 18.5 and 28 inch barrels. They are quite cost effective and accept the many 500 series accessories.
$289 right now at Frontier.

The main drawback to the Hatsan stuff is they obviously don't have the amount of accessories that the 870 or 500 support. Otherwise they are very nice and well made shotguns.

What is the real difference between the Maverick 88 and the more common 500 version? Just lower quality?

Greetings i bought a maverick and it is a quality firearm great bang for the buck flawless operation.
As for difference well it is a bit lighter you will need a limbsaver recoil pad to replace the stock hard plastic one
the only other difference the fore end is not interchangeable like the 500 with all the accessories
but everything else for a 500 fits barrels stocks etc ...great buy
