I have saved up enough now to buy a 1911, I seen a nice colt and I have been looking at the springfield arms but not shure what to buy. I would like to get one that if I decide I would like to get into competitive shooting I would not have to buy another one. can anyone help me with the make, length, options and perhaps with the make a modle based on their experence that would be a good start for me. Thanks for your time!

I would look at Colt, Dan Wesson, Kimber, Para-Ord, Springfield, and Smith & Wesson 1911A1s. I would take the one with the best fit, finish, sights, and trigger. If you want a project gun look no further than the Norinco 1911A1. Regards, Richard:D

Not just a project gun, there are people that shoot IPSC with these "almost" out of the box......A couple of hours reworking the stock parts, and you get yourself a decent shooter.....especially up here where a new Nork is less than $300 US....

Why spend $800 - $1000 CDN on a piece of sporting equipment when you don't even know if your gonna like the sport.......

Norinco's are a great place to start. I got mine through Marstar, but I recall a post here someplace that mentioned another Canadian dealer who does some basic work on the gun for a modest increase in price. Worth searching for.

Out of the box you will want to change the grips. And I found after field stripping and removing the factory grease the trigger became much smoother.

using my buddy`s ID, my suggestion is norinco, you will never how much fun you could get by upgrade it by yourself, I put around 300 extra on my nork 1911, so much fun which I never had with my sig 226 glock 17. also the ammo for .45 are not cheap,if you shoot lot like me, 9mm is a good choice

coltfan, I agree with you. Both of my Norincos would shoot with a Colt Gold Cup just as they came out of the box. I have had work done to both of mine and now they will shoot with the best 1911s out there. Regards, Richard:D

Tuned Norinco Commanders for $480 and tuned 1911A1 for $450.

Guaranteed.

Probably your best bet right now.

That STI looks like a neat item......probably gonna be a grand with taxes in...up here......
Maybe a Springfield Mil-Spec, would be a good choice....lot's of used ones around......pm me :)

IIRC Coltfan you did a bang up job "souping up" a Nork a few years back...
I've done a few Norks...usually toss the guts away though.....used the stock parts as practice pieces....

I'm still at it......
Trying out Fusion Firearms parts....a fairly new company run by the former prez of Dan Wesson

Parts seem decent...minor stoning/fitting.....no MIM...all bar stock...Thats an STI trigger in the pic

I like the hammer...first one I have seen like it....

sounds like a good place to start then is maybe a stock gun either a springfield or a norc, I take it they are not too hard to start tweaking then?

Depends....one bad move with a stone and you have a $50 piece of scrap that used to be a thumb safety.....

Whatever you get.....detail strip it and clean it....detail strip the slide as well....and don't forget the channel that the disconnector rides in........
