I was in the same dilemma. So I opted to buy a Norico from Roger at Dark International. He imports Norinco *everything* and knows how to tweak them out of the box. He did a nice job on this one.
I have a number of club members who I've shot with who are .45 collectors, some with tens of thousands of dollars invested in .45s of all kinds. Their comments were that the early Norinco .45s were crap, but the latest stuff is a very good deal for the dollar. Many of them shot my Norinco .45 and were very impressed with it - some of them shooting it when their expensive race guns failed in some manner, and they shot very well (beating me with my own gun).
For a first timer, I'd recommend going the Norinco route. It gives you a reasonable budget from which to build what you want. This is especially important when you're trying to decide if the 45 platform is for you. I've decided its not for me. I prefer .40 and 9mm and 380, the .45 is just a little too hand-cannon for me. As such I am glad I did not spend insane money on a comp gun, and the platform I do have is quite saleable so I can move on to something else.
