Well I am chopping up an old 840 Cooey 12ga, I know that the barrel must remain 18" or longer and that the entire gun must stay over 26" ( if I am wrong please correct me)

Anyways I would like to leave the barrel 18.5" and then cut the stock down to pistol grip. Would this shotgun still pass as non restricted with a pistol grip?? Also how do I fasten the pistol grip to the action because of that long bolt?? I am thinking I can just get a shorter bolt and place a plug in the pistol grip to hide the hole. Any help or suggestions would be awesome, thanx all!!

Without a butt stock how do you plan to shot the Cooey. If you plan to fire from the hip , try shooting it that way before cutting the barrel and stock, you may decide differently. If you shorten the stock to just the pistol grip area of the stock ,the barrel will have to be at least 20 inches to make the legal 26 inches overall length. I personally would go for a standard stock shortened about 2 inches then put on a big recoil pad or get a slipon recoil pad, then shorten barrel to about 19 inches, a length that gives no room for argument on if it is long enough. But measure it yourself , put some masking tape on the barrel where you would like it cut , tape the butt stock where it would be cut and measure . By the way don't try to fire the twelve gauge with one hand , the little lever that opens the gun may rotate back into the web of your thumb and forefinger and hurt you.

as Bearman said,u are probably better off with 1/2 of the stock. This way u can tuck it against your hip when u shoot. I did a lot of them as back up for bow hunters. the pistol grip was not popular. The gun will lift hard & back into your hand. It is also a strain on your wrist. Bin there done that, got the pain. Just my 2 cents AJ

Thanks for your help all, keeping some butt stock will help with the problem of attaching also. I will try shorting by a couple inches and then all I will have to do is fab a new butt plate. Anyone have any tips on how to install a front bead on my newly shortened barrell?? Thanx again!!
