I have a new rifle on the way and I could really use CGN's help on getting setup with the best scope in my budget.

Basically I'm moving away from handguns and my AR now that I've discovered the fun in going for distance. The only scoped rifle I have right now is my 7mm savage and it came with a basic scope already mounted.

Now I have a savage 110BA in .338 lapua on the way and I really have no idea what to look for in a scope. My budget cap is $800, I can go to $1000 but I would really like to avoid pushing past $800. I know to get the most out of my rifle I need something high end but its just not in my budget right now.

Like I said I'm a blank slate when it comes to scopes, I need my hand held on this one guys, any help would be greatly appreciated. :sniper:

If you had the budget I would go for a NightForce or Schmidt & Bender PM-II.........leaning towards the S&B.......

For decent glass in your price range you may find certain models of the Leupold MK4 line used.......

or the Mark4 PR new....

There is also Sightron or Vortex....I have never used one, but for the price many here swear by them......

Have a look at the Sightron III line of scopes, they are very close to your buget range. I have a 8-32 LRMOA that I got off the EE for $800 in like new condition so far I am very pleased with it. Jerry at Mystic Precision sells them, good guy to deal with.

I second taking a look at the Sightron line of scopes.

The S lll line runs around the top end of your budget. They have 30mm tubes, giving you a (arguably) brighter image and a larger range of windage and elevation. The S llls also have fully multi coated lens.

The S llB lineup have 1" tubes, but basically all the other features of the S llls. Dollarwise they run from below your budget to up around the baseline.

The S ll lineup also have 1" tubes but lack some of the features of the other series and do not have the fancy coatings. They run well below your budget and are probably a lot less scope than you want.

Sightron gives a fully transferable lifetime warranty and produce an excellent product (IMHO).

As far as magnification goes, that will depend on what you want to do with your rifle. Tactical shooters tend to go with lower magnification and more compact scopes while target shooters ie:F Class tend to lean towards the higher end of magnification and larger scopes. Variable power scopes are pretty much the norm these days, but you can save yourself some money by going to a fixed power, although you will lose some flexibility to adjust for mirage etc. If you plan on shooting variable ranges with a high degree of accuracy then you should probably consider a scope with parallax adjustment and target style turrets. Reticle style will also depend on end use and personal preference.

I would give a call to either Peter Dobson (Hirsch Precision) or Jerry Teo (Mystic Precision), both highly knowledgeable people with great customer service. They will be able to help you determine your needs and supply you with the scope to fit both those and your budget.

Good luck with you quest.

Thanks for all the help guys, I now have a good list to start weeding through. :D

On a side note I had a guy at work swearing his life on Huskemaw optics. I haven't had much of chance to look into them and was wondering if anyone had any experience with the brand?

for your budget id be looking at the leopuld or sightron line ups, they are at the top of your budget but at well over a buck a shot with a .338LM you want to make them count!

Gun boy was right with the nightforce or S&B but they are way above. the NF will come in and around 2g, the SB well over that, my 12-50 came in at just under 3g with taxs, and the my 5-25 with h59 rectical set me back 4:eek::puke:

Stop talking to that guy about guns/optics... ;)

Nikon ProStaff is GOOD. I got one and, it's not only cost me $150 + tax, but was and still is VERY clear, reliable and accurate. Loo-pold of same quality would be more $$$.
I got one and only hunting rifle so far, my bud has 30+ hunting rifles. He looked/felt quite upset when we compared the scopes...
He still has rifles I admire and wish I had $$$ to buy.

My rifle is Savage 30-06. No accuracy (even a clue) issues after 60 rounds of 150-180gr; each.

My bud is American and has large property in North West US thou.
