I was wondering if any of you in this great land of ours has heard of Ellwood Epps doing a conversion on a P-14 action to a .308 Norma mag, but still using the original barrel? Of course I know you'd need the larger diameter bullets, but it sounds interesting to me. If this rifle is for real, do you think the .311 bullets on the market today would be addequate for the volocities achieved with the Norma Mag? Let me know what you think of this, it's kind of peaked my interest, and I may just go after this rifle. Or is somebody confused and has the chambering wrong, he assures me it's not a .303 Epps, but what I've described above.   He said there are even custom neck dies with it. I like chamberings that are not the norm, so this would be something right up my alley:)

It was called the 303 Epps Canadian Magnum and he did a bunch of them! :D This was forty years ago when there were many more P14s around than US Model 17 rifles.

It seems to make more sense to do this on the 17 rifle, which has the 308 bore diameter and a magazine that is much easier to convert to accomodate the magnum case.

The bolt face on the P14 is correct for the magnum case however, so it's six of one and half a dozen of the other.

The real clincher though is bullets. There are far more that will handle the higher velocity well in .308 than there are in .311, although Steve Redgewell's 200 gr bullet might be able to handle those velocities.

Cool, thanks a lot Ted. So I guess this guy isn't confused then, LOL. I think I'm going to look into this a little further. It would be neat to have a piece of history from a Canadian the likes of Ellwood Epps. Not like I need another .308 Norma, the one I have if excellent, but what the heck, what's one more:D

Arron, the guy is not confused....not since I last checked him out in the mirror. See my post today in MILSURP regarding the rifle and die....as when I don't know I ask! Now, you had forgotten that I am in your computer with all of these other guys...watching you! I had never taken a good look at the rifle as I had no interest...but it is much better than I had thought and I have begun to play with it...you'd better hurry before I get attached!

LOL, Ok Dave, maybe it was me more than anyone that was confused. I hadn't heard of such a bird before, and like you I came here to ask as well. Ted is the man with the answer to our question. Oh, and PM sent LOL.
