Help pick my red dot!

So I just recently got my Norc shorty and the rear sights are a p.o.s.
I want to remove the rear sights and put a red dot in.

Option 1 - m14.ca red dot mount with an aim point pro. Can anyone confirm a good cheek weld with this optic? Will it sit too high? Is the rail long enough to accept the aim point?

Option 2 - m14.ca jpoint base and hood set up. Who in Canada is selling Jpoint red dots?

Option 3 - feel free to chime in.

Also I am not a big fan of the forward mounted long eye relief set ups.

Thanks!

Barrel mounted rail such as an ultimak m8 or m14.ca plus an aimpoint micro or hensoldt RSA is the lowest you're going to get. I've tried mounting red dots higher and find it akward. Then you can replace your rear sights with a GI or garand set and have the ability to use both

This is a setup on one of mine, SHG and RSA. I likes it:

I've used both and I prefer the trimmer & lighter SHG from M14.ca.

Picking the right red dot is more of a personal choice, I like an Aimpoint that sits low.

Ha ha, well I should also mention that when I got my Norc shorty I pulled the rear sites off with the intention of putting my Springfield standard sites in its place. TWO HOURS i spent trying to get them on, but it just won't go! Windage site goes in just fine. Can't get the elevation site in all the way ( and yes I know the elevation knob has a flat detent and has to go in a certain way )

Hence my preference for something that goes in the rear site pocket. I may not admit defeat just yet with the rear sites though.

The comp 4 optic pictured above is an absolutely solid optic, good as it gets IMO.

I am a fan of almost every Aimpoint, I have owned H1/T1, ML2, Mcomp4 and M68. I know there are other brands that may be equally as good but haven't strayed to far from my Aimpoint.(except for one Trijicon) and it sits in my safe.

Black Hawk Down movie rifle.
Aimpoint, yes.
Comp M4, no.

The 1993 Somalia mission predates the M68 COO by about 4 years although experimental Aimpoint CompM sights
were no doubt around in small quantities or troop test models before general acceptance of the sight in 1997.

My best guess: The precursor to the CompM ML

"...the BlackHawk Down setup..." Movie prop gun nonsense. Red dot dots are too big. A 2 or 3 MOA dot will cover the entire black at 100 yards.
"...TWO HOURS i spent trying to get them on..." You fit the parts?

2 or 3 MOA dot on a 2-3 MOA gun seems about right......

2 MOA dot @ 100 yards.

Ever tried shooting from a moving helicopter? Neither have I, but I would think it would be easier getting on target with a red dot vs a scope.

Its been documented that the movie armorers got it right historically.

I know its geeky but i still like the setup.

Also remember that he was shooting at man sized "targets", not a small black circle at 400 yards.

I have fitted the parts a bunch of times, it is when I got to put them back on the receiver there is some kind of hitch. Mind you my wife is the one who puts the kids Christmas presents together after I throw my screw driver at the wall and swear!

So after a few hours of research on the web I think I will be going with a m14.ca short hand guard ( $200 ish ) and a middle of the road $250 2 moa red dot of some kind. I decided against the jpoint because it is 4 moa and it's company web page states that operating temperature is in the -13 Celsius range. That just won't cut it in the prairies!

The m14.ca red dot mount that fits in the rear site seems to limit the number of red dots it will take to the more pricey micro red dots like the aim points which are in the $600 range.

Most M14 nork owners will opt for a bushnell trs-25 on a utg handguard. Will it work yes is it economical yes. If I was going for the cats meow it would be a Trijicon RMR green dot fiber optic/tritium on a low profile handguard rail set.
