hey guys need some help. i have a leupold vx-1 and the elevation turret is maxed out and still just barely on poi. windage is ok. scope is mounted on weaver one piece base and weaver rings and factory scope mount holes on a marlin 1895gbl. had it to the range the other day and went through 25 rounds and still wouldnt sight in well. shooting off a bench and table(sand bags). shooting low and cant bring the elevation turret down anymore to meet poi. hunting season starts tomorrow and i was hoping to be out in my blind with this rifle sat. morning. i have the range booked for tomorrow. any ideas? i have heard about shimming but have never done it before. cheers.

Pull your mounts, and rings and make sure everything is torqued down to spec and is on the right direction.

Have you shot this gun before with this scope on it? There's a small part of me that wants to make sure that the scope is oriented the correct way on the rifle as well.
 
i have shot with just the irons and it was ok. i think i will pull it apart tonight and double check everything and reinstall. i'll post a pic after to see if you spot anything that i may be missing.
 
Looks like the base has a slight taper. Make sure it's mounted the right way.

For a quick fix try to get a small piece of shim stock .003" - .006" thick to place under the REAR of your mount. (REAR 3/4" of base) Only has to be about 1/2" X 1/2" slightly larger wouldn't hurt. If you've got the time and can spare a piece of ammo brass, cut a piece from the neck of your brass to provide a piece of stock to make the shim. If you're at a camp and don't have access to any tools or other options you can get away with a piece of electrical tape laying down 2 pieces under the REAR of the base. This will compress but if you torque down VERY SNUG without overdoing it, you can make a temporary piece of shim. This is a LAST resort only, the brass stock is best. Best of luck.

I've never been a big fan of uneven ring cap spacings.
Wide on one side and tight on t'uther.
Causes weird chit when weird chit tends to occur.
Not saying this is your problem, but if you're moving the base around,
might help to tidy them up a bit....?
 
well ,took the scope and rings off and double checked everything and set both turrets to centre position before reinstalling. centred turrets between rings just to be sure gapped rings evenly. tried bore sighting and same results. elevation is maxed out by the time it reaches poi and windage is ok with adjustments left. wont know where its hitting for sure until the range tomorrow. any ideas? shims? if shims what do you suggest, i saw one fella on youtube used smooth pieces of a pop can cut to different lengths, placed shim on bottom of his ring.
 
Pop can idea is good, nothing fancy. I've done it both ways but prefer to put the shim under the base mount. If I remember .001" shim will give ABOUT 1" increase in POI at 100 yards but you have to try it out to be sure. Let us know how it turns out.
 
success! i made two identical shims to fit under the scope on the rear ring. made them so there was no overhang on the rings.length was where the left side of the ring is split over to the right side split and up beyond that by a 1/4". centered scope adjustments, centered turrets in the rings, mounted the ring caps and tightened,spaced evenly on both sides. checked with bore sight. VICTORY! only needed a couple clicks of elevation and windage to be bang on poi. gonna let it sit over night to settle, recheck mounting screws in the morning and then for the real test at the range tomorrow afternoon. so far so good. cheers. (shims were cut from a pop can)
 
just got back from the woods. was able to sight the scope in with only a couple clicks of elevation and windage at 50 yards. ready to rock some whitetails now. ;) . thanks to everyone for your help. i appreciate it.cheers!
