Hi all,

I've fired this rifle before, and it was problem free. Took it to the range today, and first shot fires, but the rim of the case right where the extractor hooks on sheared off. I've tried spinning the case to no avail, and I've tried hammering it out. Advice please. Do I need a broken case extractor, and if so, who in BC would have one? Or is there a simple thing I'm missing? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

"...I've tried hammering it out..." How? A cleaning rod down the barrel and a plastic mallet should pop it out with no fuss.

you wont be able to use a case extractor if only the rim is busted .

if hammering dont work then go to canadian tire and get the 5 vise grips special for $10 , the needle nose vise grip will probably do the trick , if you manage to turn it and then try the extracting again with the bolt .

A stiff strong rod in the barrel hit firmly with a hammer has to drive an empty case out...

But I have a question... what is an 858 case ? I have never heard of it...

sorry, should have been clearer about the 7.62 x 39 thing. I have also tried turning it, but also to no avail. Will try some more things tonight. Thanks for all your suggestions.

"turning it"? It turns in the chamber? If it does, there is something holding it in place. Are you sure the bullet left the barrel?

nope, does not turn, but I tried. The whole case is there, bullet did leave barrel, it's just that the case rim sheared off right where the extractor hit it, leaving no meat with which to extract case.

That clears that up. How hard are you hitting that rod. Are you useing a light fibre rod, as in a cleaning rod or a dry wooden dowel or a 1/4 inch steel rod?

Don't be to gentle with this thing, it was made to handle over 40,000 psi.

The last time you shot it, did you use corrosive ammunition and did you clean it properly. It almost sounds like a rusty chamber or at least in the shoulder throat area.

I've had cases where half the head pulled off, and all could be pounded out with a stel rod, if it was stiff enough.

One other thing that did happen to me with an M1 carbine, a very small ring of brass came off one of the case mouths of a previously fired round. Not large, about 1mm.
All of a sudden, after shooting a couple of 30 round clips (they were legal in those days), a round jammed solidly in the chamber, the extracter took out a portion of the rim. I tried a few field expedients, such as the cleaning rod and screw driver, no go.

When I took the rifle home, I put a rod down the bore and measured it to make sure the bullet had exited, just like you did. I thought a light tap with a rod should knock the stuck case from the chamber, just like you. Nope wouldn't budge. OK, next stripped the rifle down to a barreled action only, Then got a 1/4 inch steel rod, put it all the way down the bore to the case base and gave it a whack with a leather mallet. Nope didn't work either.
Next, I put the baxe of the receiver against the leather pad on the bench and got high enough to reach the end of the steel rod with a hammer. I gave it a really hard, one handed hit and the case + the leftover bit popped out. Big surprise.

I was darn lucky the rifle didn't fire out of battery. Upon checking the fired brass, i noticed a half dozen other cases with burred mouths from comeing into contact with the left behind ring.

It's easy to miss something like this. Even after cleaning, the piece looks like part of the chamber.

Get a decent rod and give the case a really good whack. It has to give way. Even if it's a steel case, it should be softer than the surrounding steel in the chamber, so you shouldn't hurt anything.

well, I believe I am well and truly screwed. None of the suggestions worked, but thanks though, that case was just not coming out. Due to some more butchering attempts at fixing it, there is now no part of the case sticking out of the chamber (don't ask, I'm on the edge here). The barrel is clear now, with the exception of the now open ended case. Does anyone know a good gunsmith in the Vancouver area? On a side note, I had always cleaned it after firing with windex etc... due to the corrosive primers, but seeing as how this happened first shot out, I must have missed something (kicks himself even harder now). Anyways thanks all, I really appreciated all your help,
Evan

This is a long shot because I've only heard of it happening with hot AR barrels--not after the first shot--and lacquered ammo (or old Wolf ammo with too much sealer), but lacquer can melt and gum up the barrel.

Worst case it can weld a casing to the barrel when it cools. If this is a possibility then acetone might soften it enough to remove, keeping in mind acetone is death to a lot of plastics.
