So after shooting some real calibers and distances a buddy of mine pushes me into getting a plinkster. I like the Mossberg 715T autoloader. I was told at Reliable in Vancouver it is a non-restricted gun but it has 18" barrel. Is this one of the things when only OAL applies ? My next question is, Mossy is just under $ 300,- while the their competitors such as Ruger SR 22 or SW mp 15 are pretty much double the price. Is it merely because they are way overpriced or is it because Mossy is a junk? Are there any "real" issues with the rifle?
Thanks for any info

You'll find plenty of fans of that gun in this forum and while I haven't shot one myself, I've held them...and seen a few guys struggling to make them work at a range I frequent. To me, they feel cheesy/flimsy and look good from a distance only. Don't mean that to be a slight on those who own/love them, they're just not my cup of tea. My favorite, and only .22lr semi is a Marlin 795 and it TOO has a cheesy plastic stock~but better than the Mossberg Tactical! AND, it's doing all plastic should do, BE a stock. It was very accurate out of the box, has never failed to fire/eject, and costs $149 almost everywhere you look. I'm a not-too-old fuddy-duddy, so take my opinions with a grain of salt, the "tactical" craze doesn't appeal to me a whole lot.

With regards to the Ruger SR22~for $300 you're overpaying for a Mossberg Plinkster in a plastic shell, for close to $600, you're overpaying for a Ruger 10/22 in an aluminum shell~your call. I haven't a shred of interest in owning another Ruger 10/22, but do feel some urges....from deep within....whenever I hold an SR22. :) I won't admit that to just anyone. :) My opinion~unless you can afford a far superior rifle (SR22) forget about the tactical look and get a standard Marlin 795/Marlin 60, Ruger 10/22 if you want a semi-auto~you'll be happier in the long run.

I've owned both the flat top and carry handle mossy. Loved them both and they both shot as accuratly as an sr-22 but cost half as much. Yes the mag release it horrible and it does have an ok bolt hold open. But you need to ingauge it yourself. It's NR unlike the M&P and holds 25 rounds.
I've upgraded to a su-22. I like the fact it folds and has higher cap mags. Plus the lower is swappable with the su-16.

I just got back from the range with my 715 carry handle.
I was on a specific mission...to try some of the techniques shown in this DVD http://store.magpul.com/product/DYN021/175
I wanted to run throught some of the drills in the DVD...setting up targets at 3 different distances and getting as many shots as possible on target in as short at time as possible...basically shooting accurately as fast as I could pull the trigger.
Went through 6 full mags (150 rounds) in under 10 minutes.
Using ipsc targets I hit center mass all but twice and suffered NO failures of any kind.
Yeah, you can get the odd bad mag from Mossberg...but for every person complaining about the 'plastic' feel (the ISSC at twice the price is the same weight with the same plastic) there are about 20 people who don't have time to post because they're too busy at the range having a blast.

Totally agree, haters will always hate. I do wish the mag release was better and that the bolt hold open worked more like an AR. however it is a great gun and very accurate

-Mag release is touchy.........as mentioned, a known issue...usually rectified with the purchase of a new mag ($22)
-Bolt won't hold open..........yes it does. After the last round pull it back an push in, as the instructions say.
-It's plastic........................so is the ISSC at $650. It's a $300 gun for cryin' out loud!

Gun Test, Guns & Ammo and numerous others give it a thumbs up.
IMR4320...don't listen to the naysayers...it's the most fun you'll have for the price.

Plus it looks like an AR and has a threaded barrel.

We need our rifles reliable , inwhich both Ruger and Mossberg are.
The Ruger has a kazillion accessories which makes it ever so popular , including custom trigger systems and custom barrels to improve accuracy ...so it can match the Mossberg's accuracy out of the box...ha:

Once reliablity has been established and when it comes to "tactical" .22LR , it's all about looks.
The Mossy Tact's are as tactikool as it gets and I think they're better looking than the SR22.
Plenty of accessories to fill those quad rails available and still be cheaper than a out-of-the-box , barebones SR22.

There's just something about the SR22 with a 30rd mag , that reminds me of my Grandads donkey in the springtime...

Hahahahahaha, funny! I can't tell you how many tims at the range, people would stop and watch me shoot and then ask me, what the heck gun am I shooting? When I tell them it's a 715, there jaws drop. When they feel the weight compared to the sr and other 22s. There jaws drop again. Like some have said, yes it's plastic and you may not like that but the issc and most tacticool kits are plastic aswell! The bonus is the gun comes kitted out and is almost half the cost from the start. The big thing that turns me off of the sr or any 10/22 is to tacticool them, most spend over $1000 including the gun cost to kit. The mossy on the otherhand is maybe $400 for the same thing.

i loved my 715t. it took about 400rds to break in, but once that was done it was solid, no ftf or fte ( maybe 1 in 500 if that). very acurate with the cheap holo i had on top of it, and with 4 mags the guys at the range always got a kick when i would dump 100rds in under a minute lol. and with no jams or leading issues at that speed either hahaha. it was a great gun but i got a nomad and sold the moss. i will never buy another 10/22 again tho, no features takes the fun out of having a tactical rifle. bottom line, moss is the best bang for your buck as far as a tac rifle goes. abit of a pain to dissassemble, but heck it really doesnt need a cleaning unless your having issues with it, its a cheap .22, take it for what it is.

Oh man all the times I could hear people sayings "what kind of AR is that guy shooting" just made my day over and over. I've got thousands of rounds through my gun and get the odd FTF with bulk ammo which is expected, or when I jerk the mag while firing which the manual says DON'T DO!

Gun just keeps getting more goodies added to to, snagged a FREE AR scope riser locally on the EE and now I can aim without stressing my neck at all since before scope was really low.

out of the tac .22's i've handled the mossberg looks and feels the best (I really like the weight of the SR22, but that's all it has going for it), the quality of the plastic is good and despite being mostly plastic it is very solid, fed and shot all sorts of ammo without any issues (loved standard velocity stuff)
almost all the other tac 22's look like sh!t IMO, unless you're going for a starship troopers look (mostly goes for the gross looking ruger archangle/nomad kit) also the quality and feel of the plastic on the ruger kit was disapointing (rubbermaid/tupperware comes to mind).

Sat on the fence with picking one up for a loooong time.
Decided to grab one last week and give it a try.

I'm now upset i waited so long to grab one.

Just ordered up my magpul CTR stock and vert. grip!

...took it out to the range last week and one of the other guys came up and accused me of having prohibited mags on my AR after pumping out 25 continuous rds. :D

New shooter and my first gun. Got a flattop a month ago and have gone out twice. Put through approx. 400 rounds. A few FTE but I have started with lower cost Winchester and Remington ammo. As per other threads I am going to try American and CCI soon to see if there's a difference. I have added a red dot and will be getting a vertical grip soon. Very cool looking rifle,
it's shell is plastic but solid enough for me! Rails seem very solid as well. Can't beat the price and no regrets here.

I'm a new shooter and the 715 was my first purchase (I was given a couple rifles by my Dad). I love the 715T, it sucked for the first hundred rounds with a few FTE. I found the bolt wasn't as smooth as it could be, a cleaning later it's done six hundred rounds without a failure. Firing cheap Winchester and some CCI. I also installed an o-ring on the barrel at the muzzle end of the housing which is supposed to improve accuracy.

Currently sighting in a cheap scope on it, it's about 3 inches too high at 100 yrds. Next time at the range I should have it all worked out.

i owned one. first gun ive ever sold. hated it. 2 piece plastic shell. felt gross. jammed after 100 rounds. garbage imo.

Make that 12 for.

I picked up a 715t flat top about a week ago. Gave it a good clean, and hit the range last night. 450 rounds through it with zero issues. Once I got it sighted, it was ridiculously accurate with both the irons, and the elcheapo red dot sight I picked up.

Sure, it's plastic and it feels a little weird in your hand. I find the handgrip to be a little small, and lacking a solid feel. But it fires great.

Also, there are so many accessories to pick up for them quad rails. You can fulfill all your ar15/Barbie gun desires on this thing. I ordered rail covers, buis, sling adaptor, afg, and a ctr stock, and I'm still not at what I would spend on a vanilla sr22.

I love this little gun. Now I just need more mags. 4 just doesn't cut it and reloading interferes with happy fun time.
