Dear CGN folks; I am a long time lurker and seldom post. I am considering buying a revolver (partly to piss off of our gun hating Liberal Prime Minister, partly because we will be moving to where we will be close to an excellent range).

I am looking for input on what would be a reliable quality product, either in .357, .44 mag or .45 LC.

I have not owned a handgun for well over 10 years and have not paid any attention to handguns for good deal longer.

I look forward to your thoughts and input.

Thanks in advance. GRF

Can't go wrong with either the Ruger GP100 or S&W 686. Both high quality, good triggers, reasonably priced.

Lots of options. You may want to decide first if you want a double action revolver or a western style single action.

357/38 special is probably the sweet spot for a calibre if you only have one revolver unless you want a classic single action 45.

Quality is relative to your budget. 1000 will get you a great revolver from Smith and Wesson and Ruger like a 686, GP100 or Blackhawk. I wouldn't go less than that. 3000+ will get you the cream of the crop like a Manurhin MR73, or a collectable like the Colt python.

I should add that you can get very good condition used Smiths and Rugers for less than 1000

Out of the box. a Smith has a better trigger than a Ruger.

But a Ruger is easy to tune up and a gunsmith can give it a trigger job.

38/357 is an excellent choice

A Smith K frame is a nice gun to shoot, as is a Ruger Security Six, if you are shopping on EE.

The K frame includes the M66, M19, M13

You can also find K frames in 38Spl.

I like S&W 686. I've only had two, but they both had decent triggers, and were very accurate with 38spl loads. I have a K frame model 10 as well, excellent gun, very accurate as well. I'd recommend something in 357 if you want to shoot hotter loads. 686 is an L frame and more reinforced for 357 loads than a K frame. I also had a 357 N frame and it was a good gun, so I would say all my S&W experiences with wheelguns have been excellent.

I would try the used market. Quality guns like the Smiths and the Rugers take a lot to wear out.

And the 357/38 is the way to go for a first/only revolver. I I had to replace all my revolvers for some reason, my first purchace would be a used Smith & Wesson Model 13.

Another vote for a 38sp/357 mag. I however am a Ruger fan, so gp100 is what I'm going to suggest. I have 44 mag also. When I was younger I went for the big boom, now if I shoot the 44 at all is with a light special load so I can enjoy it. I would say go 38spl but with a 357 mag you have 2 calibers to shoot. I find starting out a range day with 38 and then going to 357 mag for 20 or 30 rounds is absolute bliss.

My opinion

gdawg; as much as I love the classic single action revolver I am looking at a double action.

Guys, hanks for all the input!

100%

I sold my 4.2-inch Ruger and have regretted it since. But I have a 686 that I love, too.

Can't go wrong with either.

DanRR; thanks for heads up but I am a good 6 months away at least from making a purchase.

thanks for all the input folks!

Consider the price of ammo before you decide.

The 357/38 is easy and inexpensive to reload for (using the same die for both) . Lots of fun with different powder/load/bullet combinations available.

Used single stage presses at reasonable prices show up all the time at gun shows and on EE.
