I received a Cabalas .54 smokepole from a partners estate and am interested in giving it a try. Although I have several cap-n-ball revolvers I have no experience with front stuffers and I didn't get a manual. I was thinking of trying 100 gr. of FFg Goex under a 390 gr. Lee REAL bullet. Am I on the right track or am I starting too high?
Thanks in advance

Two suggestions; get a copy of Lyman's Blackpowder Manual and read it particularly the introduction which deals with muzzle loaders in general. The bulk of the book is loading tables giving load pressure and velocity for many calibers and barrel lengths.
Second if you are target shooting 50 -60 gr of 3F with a patched round ball is plenty for almost everything. 100 gr is a hunting load and just wasting powder for everything else.

Thanks

I was out and tried it yesterday and found that a .528 ball and .020 patch over 65 gr. of FFg shot to PoA. I think I will enjoy this new varation of my "drug of choice."

I use 70 grains of 3F and a 530 RB in mine and it shooots real well. Your buddy Merv shoots a 54 also. I am sure he can offer you good info. as he kicks a lot of ass when he goes to the shoots.
Carry on!!
