I needed to plug my 870 for deer hunting tomorrow. My mag follower fell out and I am not sure what the flat sides are for?....

I just put it back in and don't see anywhere that needs to be lined up for the flat indents above? I presume they don't line up with anything as the tube is the same all the way in.

The nubs are on the muzzle end on some models, as long as it's in there, you should be good to go.

If the nubs are on the receiver end, you won't be able to put a round in there!!

The nubs you speak of are actually two dimples indented towards the inside of the mag tube. The dimples are located where the barrel ring would cover the mag tube when the barrel is in place. About an inch from the very front of the mag tube.

An 870 Express model would have these. If your gun is a Police Magnum, for example, it wouldn't have these dimples as those come with an extension installed from the factory.

The channels on the orange follower are there to get past the dimples in the mag tube.

Many people flatten these dimples, or outright drill them out with a 1/4" drill bit when they want to add an extension to the mag tube.
