Watch Best of the West, they shoot long distance all the time and knock everything down in one shot (it is a TV show however and I'm sure they've edited some misses)
They use a 7mm Rem Mag with 168 high BC bullets. The gun is basically a remington 700 action with a different stock and a Made in China Huskemaw Scope.
If you don't mind weight and can save a little more money there's a few old Lazaroni Titans with Schmidt and Benders floating around for 4-5k. They are excellent 1000 yard rifles.
I agree with the guys above. I would recomend a 270,280 or 7mag. Use high BC bullets for long range, but don't expect to be nailing everything at a kilometer, 6-800m is pretty extreme for long range hunting. And there is a huge difference between 600 and 800. To do it on a budget, I would try a used 700 BDL and the new Leupold Canadian scope with the adjustable turret.
