Help! primer leak... destroyed bolt face...

Never had a problem with Win primers nor brass but that doesn't prove anything. Still, I'd start with checking the gun's headspace. It could be wrong from the factory (if the gun was purchased new) or messed up by the previous owner. That or incorrect sizing could easily account for the duds. and smoke from the action.

All I use is WLR primers and never had an issue, perhaps to hot a load or primer pocket is out of round?
There are some lots out there with thin primer cups. Winchester is actually taking responsibility for the damaged bolts and are paying for the repairs.
This tells you that it's most likely their fault.

Did the OP use primers from the affected lot? If yes than, it's most likely their fault. If not, it's least likely their fault.

These are the hazards of reloading, (and the internet) we have to trust that the poster's information is correct and scientific.
I have asked for the lot numbers to see if the 1000 that I have purchased may be the problem to look out for.
I have no reason to question quality control on the loading process in question, or do I? We do not know each other.
So far I have had no issues with any primer manufacture, and I will load pretty hot at times. Although I have grown up a bit in this area.
Just sayin'.

Thanks for all the replys everyone. i will check the lot number on those primers tonight and let everyone know. if anyone else also knows any affected lot number please post here so everyone would know! In the main time i'm going to contact a gun smith to see how much it will cost me and save up the money for it.... :(

I'm going through the repair process with Winchester right now. I damaged the bolt face of my .270 and my K31 with a Winchester primers before I realized what was happening. They will pay for the repairs but I wouldn't expect to get your rifle back by hunting season. Actually if you contact Winchester now you might hear from them by hunting season!

Hi, how do you go through the process with them? do i call them and give them the lot number? if it's defective batch do they designate gun smith that you have to ship to or can you do it anywhere and they will reimburse you?

Thanks!

I've read so many bad threads about winchester primers lately... Anyone still using them should spend some time on this site and others to find many more recent stories about them leaking.

It's several lot numbers according to CGN / alberta outdoorsmen/etc

Had the same problem. Winchester bought all the primers off me and paid for shipping out East Canada, can't remember where. did not help me with bolt damage thou. They did say they had problems
with their primers and would comp for the primers! will never use their primers again. CCI for now on!

There is also a big thread on this issue at 24hourcampfire. Here is a list of bad lot numbers they have found. There may very well be more that have not been added to this list.

Winchester Primers are now pure scrap! I never saw so many incidents involving pirmers others than Winchester WLR! ####ty, to say the least.

I have just come across this problem with a brick of primers that I have had for a while now.
Less less than 100 used out of the brick and have had 2 primers blow out of the corner.
I have a # at Winchester to call as the lot I am using is not listed above. Lot # DKL787G.

I will let you now what I find out.

Who did you contact? I have some other bad winchester ammo I want rectified

The bolt face on my savage is toast from this too, I had switched primers during load development, I had a few pop. I figured I was over pressure, started backing off, and backing off, and before I knew it I was below book minimum and I was still losing primers. I wasted a lot of time and components, I figured it was my fault so I kept trying to work through it. I would got a few hundred rounds with nothing, then I would get 2 or 3 in a row.

To the poster that said he as gonna tell on the OP to Winchester, go away.
It is a product problem, the OP is newer to reloading, so was I. He seems to have learned faster than I did so that's good. Should he really need to replace a gun on his own dime because Winchester released a bunch of faulty products?

So if I ruin my motorcycle because I'm learning, the manufacturer should cover all the damage.

This issue with the primers has been around for way longer than a year maybe even two.

The first pop would have damaged the bolt face anyway. I don't think win should get off the hook for these.
