I have been gifted 2 SXS shotguns by my father-in-law.

As they are coming from abroad Customs want to tax me on them, and need to know a value. I have no clue !!!

Baker 12g box lock non-ejector. 28"bbl. Made in England, and probably made between WW1 and WW2. OK shape.

Webley 700 (I think). 12g B/L, N/E. 28". Probably better shape than the Baker, but I haven't seen it.

Any informed help greatly appreciated.

From the exceedingly tiny and incomplete info given, I would say between 400 and 1000 GBP at auction in the UK. There is a Holt's auction this week with 100's of British boxlocks in it and they all have an estimated hammer price range. Go look at that and you will become extremely well informed very quickly.

195 box lock non ejectors in the sale:

If I had more info I would have given it. I haven't seen either of the guns, and my F-I-L has dementia and terminal cancer and isn't capable of answering. I'm not a shotgunner so don't know what else I can say.

However, thanks for the link, I think that'll do nicely, despite the lack of Webleys and Bakers on offer.

While the Webley & Scott 700 is a reasonably well known post war model, both the Baker and the Webley are valued by their features (original quality level) and condition, not their brand name. As non ejector boxlocks, they would typically be at the lower end of the original quality scale.

You are providing a value for customs to tax you. Used guns come in a stunning array of condition and thus value. The taxes are going to be a relatively small percentage of the guns’ value. HST plus maybe some duty, maybe not. You don’t need to over think it. Send customs to the Holt’s site after the sale if they question you. In the current UK market 1000 pounds covers both. Send customs to the Holts site if they doubt you.

I have brought in guns and picked whatever number I felt like testing at the time. Customs isn’t arguing about 70 to 120 year old guns. Just don’t say $5.

When importing stuff, what’s important is the price you paid in the country of origin. My business for 35 years was being an importer of consumer products.

If you can get them to a gun shop somewhere, preferably before you bring them in, get an estimated value as to what they might give you as a trade-in towards something new and get it in writing with the shop logo on the page. That gives the feds a 3rd party estimate of value that they will likely accept without question.

The online Holts sale info in their app is especially torturous, as are Jonny's auction preview videos. There are some great deals to be had at Holt's, but the hassle and expense of export and import cools my enthusiasm.

Thanks for the help, fella's.

I used the contact web mail page for Holts and asked directly.Very quick response saying, "Not very popular, 100-200 depending on condition."

I screen shot that and a page off the auction. Should do the trick.

Thanks again.

Excellent approach.

Some interesting notes.

I now have the guns. Customs at YVR were excellent, and incredibly helpful.

The Webley is an Ejector, which I didn't know, so may be a bit more popular.

Apparently the UK is banning lead shot and guns will have to be re-proofed for steel. That Lowers the value, but also because of a shooting a couple of years ago, they also want to ban auto's and pumps, which may help the value of the old SxS doubles.

Cabelas in Ottawa has what is clearly a steady stream of used dual triggered British Webley and Scotts side by sides coming in, so far all in 12 gauge. They appear one at a time and after one gets sold, which is fairly quickly, another appears in a week or so. They have a consistent price of around $2400. They've all been in visibly good condition-I say again 'visibly.' I've looked at a couple but haven't been too tempted because the ever changing salespeople know nothing about them and aren't too willing to devote time to selling one. If I was to hit a salesman that knows me and the gun fit, I'd probably buy one but that sort of alignment hasn't happened yet. I don't even know how these things have been choked or chambered, but of course a 2 1\2" chamber is most likely.
