I was trying to remove the crappy plug screw on a rem700 receiver in order to install a sight. but the first(from the muzzle) plug screw is broke and stuck in the hole. I carefully drilled the plug screw, but now there's still a tiny layer of material covers the interior of the hole. Could I re-tap the hole with 6-46 bottom tap? Thanks.

Drill it with a #31 drill and try the bottoming tap very carefully or try and pick out the tiny layer with a sharp pointy pick.

Thanks for your advice ardent, but the plug screw is far too brittle and hard to pick it out. The hole measures about 2.86mm. I don’t think that to drill it with a #31 bit would be an option as the hole is slightly off axis:onCrack:. I just ordered a bottom tap from brownells, now I just hope that the tap will work...

One of the reason that I posted this is to let other peoples know that Remington makes crappy plug screws:mad: and to be careful while removing them. The plug screw is poorly designed is such way that it takes nothing to break off the head.

You should not have drilled that screw as you did. There are better ways when part of the screw slot breaks off. Of the thousands I have removed in 40 years only a few ever broke... and usually because I didn't use a good fitting screwdriver on a tight screw.

I would advise you to drill the hole a bit more... open it up so you actually cut in to the threads on one side. Then try and work a pick and collapse the part of the screw and work it out by breaking it.

If you think you have a problem now, wait until you break that very hard tap off in the hole.

Don't blame that one on the screwdriver.Last year I had one do that on a new model 7 .It was turning free and all of a sudden 1/2 the slot broke off.I could understand it if it had taken force to break loose or was turning out under force.

I have heard of it happening before, but in the hundreds of plug screws I have removed from Remington actions and barrels, I have never had one that I could not get out without drilling. (touch wood) I am very careful, and have ground one screwdriver with a blade specifically for this job. Maybe that's the answer. Regards, Eagleye.
