I have an old Remington 700 sporter in .223 Remington. Five rounds in the magazine and the first round always pops out prematurely and goes sideways before the bolt can push it in. I have to curl my left hand and put my fingers on the first round as I work the bolt in order to get it to work properly.

After I fire the first round, the remaining four nearly always feed perfectly without any help from me.

What's the problem? Is there too much spring pressure with the mag fully loaded?

Thanks all.

Are you sure it is a 5 shot mag, just asking cause i have had a few mags that i could fit more in than what the factory said was possible but the pressure would get to be to much and the extras would not feed.

I think so, from memory of surfing about the gun a year ago. There isn't much more effort to get the last round into the magazine. Not that I've noticed anyhow.

You need to reduce the spring pressure a bit. The flat spring under the follower can be squeezed with a good pair of pliers at the folds to reduce tension slightly. Do not overdo it! Just a wee bit at a time until the tension is correct. Eagleye.
