Hi Everyone

Thanks for looking at my post and helping me!

Summary: I am looking at buying a Remington 700 SS 5R in 308. The goal is to shoot tight groups at 200-300 yards and perhaps beyond if i can find a range or safe place. I am just getting back into shooting after a 15 year hiatus. I am beginner/novice at best but I want something I can grow into without breaking the bank.

Details:
I have read alot of good reviews/experiences of the 5R. Should I get the 5R for about $1300 CDN from my local dealer or I should look at the Remington 700 XCR Long Range Tactical or perhaps a Savage (people see to like the 10FP) The 5R has a quicker twist than the XCR and should shoot the heavy bullets better but 5R only has a 24" barrel vs the XCR's 26". I think I prefer the full heavy barrel to the fluted one but I don't have much knowledge of the newest technology. I am thinking 308 as ammo is cheap (relatively) and it would be interchangeable with my winchester 70.

Info on the 5R:

XCR Long Range Tactical:

I currently have a Winchester 70 Heavy Barrel Stainless Varmint in 308 which I got 15 years ago. Since Winchester is now a part of history I thought I would spread the shooting duty over the Win70 and another target rifle.
I am thinking 308 so I can eventually reload for both and have economies of scale.

i just bought a rem 5R,308 myself, haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but i have never heard anything negative, all excellent reviews. my setup would be a bit heavy for carrying thru the bush hunting though

My vote is to build what you want. If you were thinking savage check this forum out http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=377637. Guys like Mysticplayer and Obtunded have built many rifles and could more than likely build you one for cheaper than buying a factory Rem. As for buying one I like my XCR LRT in 300WM. The barrel is a little better quality on the 5R from what I have read. But you will not be disappointed with ether gun you are looking at.

Countyboy, a factory gun is a factory gun. They all shoot about the same. Remember that more dollars does not mean more accurate. The 5R's are finished nicely on the outside, but the price is steep, and they are no more or less accurate than any other Remington, Savage or Tikka.

Find a rifle you are comfortable with and invest your money in good optics. In time, you will probably want to upgrade a little. The biggest single upgrade you can make to dramatically improve accuracy is the barrel.

If you are thinking of spending over a grand on a rifle and want the best potential accuracy, consider one of the Savage F-Class rifles. These are true match-grade rifles that need only a scope and some ammo to start improving your skills as a shooter.

You won't go wrong with the 5R. Just load it with off the shelf Federal gold 168 match ammo and the rifle will perform.

I personally like the bead blasted stainless finish and the HS stock. I also like the fact that this is a tactical rifle in disguise. You show up to the range with this rifle and it's not immediately obvious what it is. That is until you start shooting it. ;)

It looks great, it's a top end non cataloged Remington 700, the finish is superior to most, and the ones I've shot all shoot sub .5 moa. What's not to like?

Also you can get them for $1200 to $1250. When you work out what you're getting and the cost to have one put together, the price becomes very reasonable. The optics will probably cost you as much or more than that.

For over 1200 bucks (or whatever they're worth today) the XCR Long Range Tactical will shoot every bit as accurate as any F- class Savage rifle. Like the rest said....flip a coin and buy what you feel comfortable with.

Very well said. You summarized every reason I bought a 5R far better than I ever could.
