Hey guys, still relatively new to the 1911 world and i want to change the rear sight on my STI Spartan. So i was wondering if there is a guide somewhere that will tell me what sights fit what 1911. My understanding is there are different sight cuts?

Ive figured out that my Spartan has a rear sight cut of 60° x .359” cut. So how do i find a replacement sight that will fit? brownells does not list, they just say novak cuts or what not.

So please help!

Also how does one figure all of this out for future reference lets say i get another 1911 thats not STI how would i go about finding sights to fit that one?

Also is it possible to change the sight cuts on my pistol? Is it so difficult i need a gunsmith or its something i could figure out on my own, i am quite capable with my hands once i have direction and instruction.

Thanks,
Adam

Order a Brownells 1911 catalog. You will use it time and time again.

The cut will be referred to as a "Bo-Mar cut". Bo-Mar was very popular, and there are many other sights that will fit that cut. (See the Brownells catalog for options.)

It is possible, though perhaps not particularly practical, to change the sight cuts. A pistolsmith like Rodger Kotanko would weld up and then re-cut, and then re-finish, the slide for you, if you wished.

Why do you want to change the sight? Your pistol has a Bo-Mar style sight cut and there aren't many choices for sights that fit it other than the various copies of the original Bo-Mar sight. Brownells has a fixed sight from Harrison Design & Consulting that will fit, but you would have to check and see if they can export it.

Bo-Mar is out of business and many of the copies of their sight may not be up to the same standard. The STI Bo-Mar type sight already on the gun is probably one of the better ones.

Contact casey at tac-ord and he will tell you. He is a short drive from Toronto and one of the best :) He is "arwen ace" on here.

Thanks, I have a brownells catalog and it seems I'm very limited in my selection for bomar sights, what would a gunsmith charge to put Novak cuts into my sti Spartan slide?

I believe that it would be cheaper to sell your Spartan and replace it with a Trojan.

fixed sights for a bomar cut?

I am in a similiar situation as the OP.

Can anyone recommend a trijicon style front and rear sight. Looking for the three glowing dots that I am use to shooting with.

I would even considered a straight trade from my LPA sights for what I am looking for.

if its cut for a bomar it is going to look terrible with anything other than a fixed sight like this

this is also the only one I have ever seen to do this. (earlier link the thread to it on brownells) you can change a novak cut to a bomar but not the other way around

Never had good luck with fixed sights, the elevation is never quite where I wanted it. I prefer to adjust to a 6:00 hold, and be able to tweak it according to the distance. The STI 3 dot night sights from Freedom Ventures were pretty easy to install, and look ok to me. I get a great sight picture with them.
