Hey CGN,

Long story short my father let his license "go" back in the early 90s when all new/extra the regulations came in and he wasn't happy or wanting to comply but also didn't want to break the law/go to jail so he sold/gave everything away.

I was only born in 1990 myself so never got to see my dads guns or go shooting with him sadly.

He is now retiring come the end of August and got both his hunting and firearms license again over the past few months looking to spend his soon to be free time hunting and shooting.

His most favourite gun of all was an old Iver Johnson in .38S&W that was given to him by a family friend when he was young, complete with a holster.

I know they are not worth much $$$ or thought of too highly but he seems to really want THAT gun back, not something else/new which I understand...I reload so keeping him shooting and supplied with a healthy amount of ammo is no concern.

How hard would to find one in good working order be? What should I expect to pay for it? Sadly he doesn't nor I have a 12.x so it has to be a non prohib!!! :(

I HAVE seen them on the EE in the past but nothing in the past few months since I have known he wanted one, of course :p

Many thanks!!!

As marshall suggested, the trouble with these is that the vast majority of them are prohibited. Prohib Iver Johnsons go for as little as $10 at auctions.

There are some non-prohib ones around, though. If they're in good condition, they can be surprisingly valuable. This good condition non-prohib nickel 38 went for $350...

But, honestly: The majority of them are junk (Iver "Junkson" is a common nickname that you hear people use) that are not worth owning - that's why they sell for so cheap. They were cheaply made back in the day, and age doesn't improve them. Many of them are not safe to fire. Your Dad might be nostalgic and long for the gun he used to own, but he might discover that it's actually a P.O.S. if he had a chance to shoot it next to a more modern/accurate/safe gun.

Perhaps, if the I/J are really that iffy, a Uberti No2 instead? If money isn't an issue that is. Same look, good quality from what I've read
