The protruding bolt handles can indeed expand the space needed for each rifle significantly, and are a source of the dreaded ‘safe kisses.’
Maybe if the idiot thieves didn't grab the tool-box with the bolts thinking they had a score, they would have spent a bit more time looking and found something worse to take. Don't kick a guy when he's down.
Gee, Nabs, that is awful! I feel your pain. I rented my house out to a lady, who moved a murderer/crack-head in without my knowledge. Most of my valuables had been removed, but he sacked what was left and pawned a lot of it for drug money.
Very sorry to learn of your break-in. Any updates? Keep a watch on kijiji both locally and further abroad like Toronto and Winnipeg plus other classifieds. You might want to post this on other forums here in Canada and the USA. Good luck!

Why the hell would somebody store bolts out of their rifles? Truly, this puzzles me.
The OP would still have them if they were kept together where they belong.
Sadly, I strongly believe the loser thieves will look at those bolts, think whatever they are have no value, and trash them.

I do the same thing - to keep my guns unusable for shooting someone etc by criminals looking to steal firearms. Before I bought a gun safe I used to hide the bolts in crawl spaces etc.
Can anyone point me towards some break in stats for Ontario?
I'm interested in knowing just how often break ins happen.
It seems that in my area, the majority of break ins have to do with drugs (niagara falls), so the thieves usually know the victim to an extent.

Me too. Bolts are somewhere else. If you had a week, you'd never find them.
Options:
List everyone local who you have told what you have.
List everyone who has seen what you have and where it is.
Compare the two.
Consider which of these people is known to have loose lips.
Consider who they might have flapped same to.
Consider who might have need of reloading supplies, merely recognize them, or have the connections to dispose of them.
If the police won't check for prints do it yourself, or have it done by a PI.
Get prints of people on above lists who might be suspects; you know, invite them to Timmy's maybe and keep the cup!
Go door to door in your neighborhood and ask if anyone knows anything. Note reactions. Research the residents of addresses where the person seems suspicious in any way.
If it's not too late, bring in a tracking dog. Most burglaries are committed by people who live in the neighborhood if I've remembered correctly. Many if not most are.
Ask around at the places where fences and B&E artists hang out. Tell them you'll pay no questions asked; what else are they going to do with the stuff? You can always **** them later!
Take a long hard look at what was taken or disturbed and what was not. Best clues to ID of perps.
Consider whether anyone dislikes you enough to do this for no other reason.

that sucks! i also store my bolt from my milsurps seperatly, you can cram an extra gun in there, its truly horrible, lately there has been a string of ATV thefts and similar stuff, my neighbour that i help farm lost 2 quads, thousands of dollars in fuel, (tanks were locked) the worst part of it all, the thiefs are the kids of one of his better friends in the area!!! some people just need there knee caps shattered!
FWIW, I no longer store my bolts separately from the rifles, though I used to for storage pace reasons. It's a PITA, and especially if some of your rifles are bolt mis-matches, it's easy to get mixed up as to which bolt goes with which rifle.
I just built more storage and the problem went away.
Additioanlly, I have a monitored alarm with active smartphone notification, surveillance cameras, and I keep all the gun stuff in a locked room that is a separate security zone for my alarm system. The alarm company knows that sector is a gun vault and call the police with this info if it ever goes off (hasn't happened yet).
I rather suspect police response time will be better than average if the call comes in that a gun vault has been infiltrated. Just sayin'.
I also live on a busy street, so break-ins are somewhat less likely.
I just built more storage and the problem went away.

Ya , they will be there double fast,to seize your firearms. then it will be good luck getting them back in a timely fashion undamaged , or death by lawyer.

Thunder Bay is a small city and I have a feeling the bolts were likely dumped on the side of the road. We just had a snow storm come through, the heaviest being on the night that I came home to discover the break in so my attempts at searching around the area were fruitless. I have contacted the local pawn shops and I will be filing a police report tomorrow. The local gun shops are also keeping an open ear and they have been informed incase the thief tries to sell the bolts to them. I will use the advice provided earlier and list the serial numbers and some photos of the bolts and pass them along to the police, gun shops, and metal scrap yards just incase something turns up. I shudder to think the bolts are in some snow bank down the street.

While that's possibly true, it would be the case in ANY break-in where a gun goes missing. What I am hoping is that they get there early enough to avert the guns leaving the premises. Or ideally, they don't come at all because the crooks go to the house NOT displaying security system stickers and security sensors clearly visible through the windows
