Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this(I am a newbie to forums and am having trouble with the search so forgive me if there s already a post about this) but here it goes:

I am interested in buying an original Russian capture, German k98k but I am not an expert on them and I want to make sure of what I'm buying before I do. I saw one at a local shop today and am considering buying it but want to make sure it hasn't been changed (ex. fake Waffen stamps, sanded stock, etc) since being imported. Does anyone know anything key I should be looking for?

I've heard of some people fixing up Russian capture Mausers and selling them as non capture ones, is there a way to tell if that is the case?

The one I'm looking at is covered in cosmoline, has no sight hood, cleaning rod or "capture" screws(I inderstand that is normal?) it's a 1941 byf oberndorf I believe I don't kno if this helps

Any other info that cud help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

The stock should be dark red and shellacked. There will be some electo-pencil numbers on the bolt and maybe floorplate etc. Stock will likely have a new number on the side of the butt. Really condition is king, bore and stock. All the parts are mismatched so none of that matters. Don’t buy a corrected one.

Thanks a lot for the response, I will keep that in mind, the one I was looking at had electro penciling on the bolt, the stock was laminate style with new number on the side of the butt stock, the colour is kind of the in between colour(not super light but not as dark as I've seen some) I'm pretty sure it's legit but the stock not being super dark is the only thing that's making me wonder

My RC k98 has a lighter colored stock, the shellac on it was very poorly applied and literally falling off of it. It is a walnut stock though and not a laminated one
Lots of the RC k98 Mausers have dark bores but don't let that put you off as they can still be good shooters just make sure the rifling is ok

Right on good to know, I forgot to check the bore last time I was in , so will make sure to this time, thanks

Check bore and chamber condition. Check condition of bolt face. Appearance is subjective, but the RC's can be quite attractive. Frosted bores are more or less the norm, and 9 times out of 10 they shoot just as well as a pristine bore. I wish I didn't sell mine, it was a great shooter. I would bring a clean bore snake and ask nicely if you could run it down the bore once or twice.

See here for an example of how a decent one looks, unaltered.

look for one that dose not have the swastikas peened, waffan ampts in tact ,shellac still in place and a good bore, some maker codes are more sought after more than others.

I've seen a few at the canadian tire near me. They seem to be all varying in color and condition but marked down from 799 to 599. So ive been considering one myself, but i'm having a hard time locating stripper clips for k98's that aren't crummy. As some of the reviews i've seen on amazon for the ones there don't load well.

There are eBay sellers that sell new or nearly new early post-war stripper clips... I bought 20 and they are excellent.
For $599, I'd say buy it. Even if the bore is crap, it will probably still shoot. Worse case scenario, you have an action to rebuild into custom or install a NOS M98 profile replacement barrel.
