Hi Folks.

First, i know nothing about air guns, so this will probably be the worst beginner question you'll ever read here on CGN. I just baught a Ruger air hawk air rifle in .177 two day's ago. I baught it because i taught it could be cool to have one and my girlfriend is scared to death to use my large caliber.
The rifle was so cheap, and came with a little plastic scope so i just guess i can not go wrong with this.

My question his: Wath kind of grooping i can expect out of a cheap, low buck air gun like the Ruger air hawk ?

I place a target at about only 50 feets and ajust the scope. Once done, i sat on my shooting bench and can do better than 8-9 inches groups ????

I use old old .177 projectile i still have. These projectile wwhere around the garage and different place for about the last 10-12 years. Can this be a problem ??

Any clues on this will be very helpfull. Thanks

Oliver

The Air Hawk [along with most Chinese made airguns]has a reputation of being shipped with kinked mainsprings and damaged piston seals. This is a copy of the RWS34 so internal parts are interchangeable.A tuning kit for a RWS 34 and a little internal polishing will be like night and day.Removes all the twang and jumpyness.Restraining an air rifle when shooting causes fliers .An "artillery" hold is what you need to practice.A light hold allowing the gun to jump/recoil as it discharges. My son's new RWS34/.22 shot like crap until we tuned it now it's a 40 yards crow relaxer......Harold

My brother recently purchased a Ruger Air Hawk (1000 fps version) with scope in .177 . The scope is very low quality and I gave-up trying to sight the gun in with the scope. It takes a spring powered air gun about 200 shots to stop dieselling and settle in. The gun is now shooting groups of about 3 inches at 20 yards - not great but OK for a cheap hunting air gun. I had to apply blue Locktite to the screws holding the action to the stock as the vibration was constantly loosening the screws.

Perhaps your scope is the problem. My Blackhawk was grouping in an inch at 25 yards.

Agreed. These rifles are generally good shooters. I would eliminate the scope first and use open sites. If groups don't tighten up with the open sites, I would try different pellets. Something from JSB.

I have a restricted Ruger Blackhawk.

I tried 3 different Crosman .177 pellets (all I could find at CT). It definitely preferred the Crosman Destroyers which punched nice round holes and grouped 10 shots into 1.25" with the irons at 15 yards. I shot off the bench, no sand bags using an artillery hold.

Second best were Crosman hunting pointed tip pellets which cut blurry holes and grouped 2" at 15 yards.

Worst were Crosman Premier HPs which punched nice round holes but grouped 10 rounds into 3". It was my first group with the rifle so some of it may have been me.

I then mounted the included 4x scope, locktited all the screws and shot off the bench with the Destroyers. Best 5 shot group was 0.75" at 15 yards.

Thanks a lot guy's. Very apreciated tips.

I think i will shoot about 200-250 shots just to break in and settle the spring.
Then, i will trow away the scope and try with different pellets and see if the grouping gets to about 2-3" @ 20yds. I know now that i can not get better grouping than that with these kind of rifle.

If i don't get better result than wath i have now, i might look at a RSW 34 tuning kit.
mbogo3, any idea where i can find one of these kit online ??
Thanks again Cgn'ers.

This will fix things

If your gun is vibrating so badly it's loosening stock screws wait till you take it apart and find a bent spring and/or wrecked piston seal.Polish the internal of the compression tube with a notched hardwood dowel and emery cloth in a cordless drill.Carefull not to ruin the new seal reassembling it....Harold....it won't hurt to re-crown it while you're at it.

I agree about the pellets. Its taken me too long to figure it out for myself but Crossman or Daisy pellets are terrible compared to the more expensive lines. I find the RWS at TSC a better quality pellet and if you can find JSB or other european made pellets try them and then sight in your scope. Use the cheap pellets for the breakin.

I did way better. I did spend 150-175 shoots with old copperhead pellets and then i transfer to some RWS that i found at my local gun shop. I shoot a other 75 shoots and i try again to set-up the scope. I got down to about 3.5" grouping @ 30 yds. Net improvement, not great yet but way improved. I will try to find some kind of used scope to improve the 2$ plastic one i have.

Thanks a lot guy's for the precious tips.
Sorry for the bad english,Oliver
