I have a skunk in my live trap i set for raccoons last night.

How can I transport it away without getting sprayed?

If it can raise its tail in the the trap you are in a lot of trouble. Shoot it behind the ear and hope for the best. Do you have a large body of water nearby?

My friend had a family of skunks move in to his deck last year. He spent most of the summer taking skunks on one way rides in live traps.

The funniest thing I witnesseed was him pulling a trailer with the skunk in the back.

Take .22 rifle with plastic pop bottle over the end of the barrel (improvised silencer) with one shot to the ear. ;>) Make sure no witneesses.

no no...drum of water, drop the trap in and it will drown and spray into the water containing the smell. Even if you shoot it will spray a bit

i had the same problem last weekend

Fortunately (for me) I trapped it beside my backyard pond.

I just dragged the trap to the edge with a long pole and dumped it in.

Usually you can call the local animal control folks and they'll take it away for you, but dead is dead I guess.

MD, I have trapped alot of skunks and the forty five gallon barell method is the best. Don't shoot it as it will spray and be a mess. Take a tarp and hold it out infont of you, covering yoursef as an ounce of prevention, as you slowly walk toward the trap. Drape the tarp over the trap and feel along the top of the trap for the handle. Then gentely lift the trap up and waltz it over to the barell of water.

I was in the process of disposing of one and I told my wife I was taking it for a swim. In all innocense she asked if they could swim and I replied that I was quite certian the could swim very well but not while in the trap. Her eyes got big and she replied oooooooooh.

Thanks guys.

I was trying to figure out how to dispose of it live (in a park or in somebody's yard whom I don't like) and asked the Mrs. what do do.

"Chuck it in the pond," she sadi. "It's probably that female that had 10 babies under the shed and harassed us all last summer."

Hey MD, I have seen 'Humae Society' types get a huge plastic sheet and walk up to the cage, and then just drop it on the cage. They then wrap it up and take it away. Good Luck!

look the skunk straight in the eyes while on all 4, Kick your right leg in to the air 3 times really fast, jump up run around the cage 7 times counter clockwise and 4 time clock wise, throw 1 pound of finely chop parsley into the air and the most improtant part is that you claim to be the 3rd coming of christ and that you have come to rid this planet of vermon. After your neighbors have you put in a "Hospital" the skunks won't be a problem anymore.

10 posts and no one sugessted " Putting it in a Liberal's office"? Dang, we're slipping

Drowning is the best bet. If you shoot it, it will loose all control of bodily functions and release the stink. Atleast, if you drown it, the stink will be semi-contained in the water

Done this before...throw a blanket over the cage, and be careful when you pick it up. I drove out of the city for a half-hour and let it go into the woods...no problem.

MD, once a skunk hole always a skunk hole. You may try to dump concrete into the hole to seal it up but the little buggers will excavate in a different spot. Cement footing are the only way to stop this.

As someone who has trapped and has caught many a live skunk, use the big sheet of plastic trick if you want to release it. Approach the cage slowly with plastic sheet stretched out. Keep body shielded by plastic, especially face:) ... and for G*D SAKE keep your mouth shut:eek:   (eye protection wouldn't hurt either...it stings like heck:mad: ) . Fold plastic sheet around cage and do what you will. If your quiet and slow most critters won't even spray the plastic:cool: . Some folks will even say (and I've had success with this ) that if you sweet talk them in a high voice or whistle to the little critters calmly....... it helps:redface:  :D :D :D !!!

When you release them most skunks are just happy to get out and run away but don't forget to shield yourself with the plastic upon release.

good luck:p :p ,

To make it safer for trapper, be sure to use a solid trap instead of a mesh trap. Two 5 gallon pails screwed together or a plywood box works great. PM me for pics of my skunk traps if anyone is interested.

Trap shoot

At the farm we have to do this often. We take it out to the end of the pasture and turn the trap door side down on the ground. Tie a long rope to the trap and slide the door open ( remember its facing the ground so the skunk can't get out ). Step back and get ready with your prefered firearm. ( I like a .22 semi for this ) Yell "pull !! " and your buddy pulls the trap away from the skunk. The trick is to blast him before he blasts you( The skunk that is). So far Farmer 30 skunks 0.

Thats how we trap shoot around here. Whats this clay pigeon thing I hear about. L.O.L.
