After doing some rather unsuccesfull research online, and then arming myself with flux and silver solder, I attempted to re-attach the front sight ramp on my husqvarna.

Flux = Handy and Harman Handy Flux for low temperature brazing

Solder = silver solder, I was told it is pure silver - is this right?

Heat = propane torch - is this enough heat?

OK the torch would not heat the sight ramp cherry through, and the silver would only melt on the ends. I assume I need more heat.

And so, if the work needs to be cherry red, I am assuming my barrel needs to become cherry red. This un-nerves me.

Am I on the right track? Does some-one on here have some applicable experiance they care to share? I would be gratefull!!

Thanks in advance, Jonathan

In my trade (refrigeration) we use silver solder. If it is the same as what we use yes you need more heat, and cherry red is about right. I would try a lower temp silver solder such as sta-brite. Both metals have to be above the flow temp of your solder to adhere.

High temp siver solder does have a high percentage of silver in it - which is why it is expensive.
I don't use high temp silver solder for this job. A good soft solder will do the job. Brownells High Force 44 is a good choice. There are numerous formulations of soft solders.
Yes, high temp silver solder does require red heat. I really do not like bringing a barrel to red heat. If you do, be sure to use an anti-scale compound in the bore. Even when using MAPP gas, the heat from a single "propane" torch is not likely going to be sufficient. Two torches with MAPP gas might do it. Oxy-propane or oxy-acetylene would be much better from the standpoint of heat.
