I bought a Husqvarna M96 in 9.3x57 recently. I don't know if the stock is original. It is an orangy lighter coloured stock. It is in good shape no cracks and nice checkering. I would like to refinish it darker like walnut colour. I don't want to spend hours on this stock. How do you strip all the old finish out of the checkering? Help please.

Remove all the metal or plastic parts first. If you have access to someone with commercial dip tanks, these seem to do a much better job of loosening the old finish than the stuff you buy in the hardware store. After a bit of work with fine sandpaper, I've had really good luck with Watco Danish Oil which seals as well as stains, then finishing with a Varathane spray. Keep the RTFI principle in mind. The Watco comes in different shades and the Varathane in glossy, satin or matt finishes.
