Back in mid December I bought a brand new Ruger GP100

I took it home, cleaned/lubed it and put it in the safe.

Around January 4-5th I took it out to fondle it and noticed there was a wierd white/beige crust on the top of the barrel. I cleaned it off, re-cleaned/lubed the gun and put it back in the safe. Today, I took the gun out again and the crust was back!!

I snapped some pictures, they aren't the best but I'm hoping someone can ID the stuff and give some insight... Is it bad for my gun?

If I had to guess, I'd suspect some residual blueing salts have crept out of the threads of the barrel/reciever.

CLP the area and swab it out as best you can.

My guess too, when the gun went into blueing tanks, it is often caused by improper rinsing techniques at the factory.

One of my Remington 788s was bad for this for a time. No panic required, just remove with an oily rag, sooner or later it will cease to appear..but it just takes time is all.

Yup, sometimes called "bloom" ... residual salts leaching out from the blueing process. Give it a good soak with some G96 and brush it into the grevices gently with a nylon bistle brush. The G96 should seep into the crevices and neutralize the bloom. ( Very common on Remington Express cantilever guns, and yes, I've seen it on a few Ruger rifles, as well as other makes.)

had the same stuff show up on a new o/u shotgun under the vented rib. I was told it was something to do with the treating/blueing process. Just had to wipe it off and give it a light oiling and it was gone. It came back, wiped it again and haven't seen that "crud" since.
