[HELP] TAPCO SKS Stock problems (Pics)

First here's the before and after shots:

I'm very happy with the functionality of the TAPCO Stock, pistol grip, collapsible butt, removable mags, synthetic stock etc.

However 2 problems have come up while assembling my stock.

Gas Tube

I did a search, and looking at different posts there doesnt seem to have a consensus.

I cannot lower the part that holds the gas tube in. It will not go into the detente position, no matter how hard I try.

Should I hammer out the retaining pin, take off the end piece, and file the plastic? Or file the end of the gas tube (which I would rather not do but see it has worked for someone else on here)?


Magazines

The Magazines fit, but don't appear to seat properly. In the photo below, the magazine catch is all the way to the rear, and doesn't lock in place, the magazine will come out simply by pulling it. Should I be filing here as well?

Looks good sir! I was lucky, my gas tube fit perfect!

AS for the mags, do both of them have problems seating? If so do you have some gunk or something up at the front where they fit in? Mine dont do that.
 
Looks awesome... I'd take it all apart and put it back together again. What I've learned:

1.Always file as a last resort.
2.If you are going to file... file the cheapest-easiest to replace part.

You may need to file the plastic on the upper hand guard( the inverted "U" shape aroudn the gas tube). It appears in your pics that the metal band on the hand guard is not sitting all the way down on the shoulder. I had to do this with a friends sks and tapco stock. Hope this helps
 
Thanks for the advice guys, the mags seem to be fitting a bit better today, I think they're just tight and have to be worked in. I'm not too worried.

Thanks kyle, that's the exact part I was trying to describe. I'll give that a shot a little later, I'm gonna have to hammer the original gas tube cover retaining pin back into shape...
 
I had the same problem with my gas tube after I installed mine on the tapco stock. I had to file a bit off the end of the tube to allow the locking cam to pass through. The tube now is angled. You just need to take a bit more off. I used a handheld rotary sander.
 
Don't Do What Donny Dont Does

Okay, got the gas tube to fit finally...

[Note some of this was done before some of the advice in this thread] After some reefing on the lever and some trial and error filing.. I noticed I've filed a lot of the wrong areas, the handguard is a little loose now and I'm going to have to re-blue some parts - but I finally figured out what part to file.
Thank God it's only a $200 rifle.



Since this seems to be a common problem, I'll show what I did to get it to work.



This worked for me but may not work for you!

I filed down those bottom nubs because I finally figured out that the locking lever wouldn't go down because the whole gas tube/handguard was slightly too high.

As you can see, filing this part cause the handguard to loosen. I filed there thinking thats why the whole thing was too high (before I assembled it). I also filed down some of the "the inverted "U" shaped plastic around the gas tube" before putting the metal back on thinking that was the problem, it may have been part of it, but I over-filed just a little bit.

All's well that ends well...

In the end everything worked out, but I have to #### around with the gas tube a little bit every time i put it back in place, and anything I mount on the rails probably wont hold a zero, as the handguard can be made to a move with enough force.

But, it was worth it. Down the road I'll probably order a replacement handguard.

Hopefully this'll help out the next guy...
 
If you're referring to holding zero for a scope on the gas tube, it might interest you to know that that is not a good place to install the scope as the heat from the barrel can move your scope even if the fitting is tight. Better over the rear sight or receiver. Thanks for the pictures.
 
i have the same problem fitting the gas tube.
it takes patience and some cursing but it does fit.
the takedown lever block doesn't mate properly with the sheetmetal part on the rear of the gas tube.if you look you'll see a cutout on that sheetmetal part that the takedown lever block slides over(i filed the sheetmetal just a little).
it ensures a tight fit but is a pain to reassemble...
 
I feel your pain B-trizzack. On the handguard I filed down the top and sides so it would fit deep into the rear bracket. I had to file, try it for size a few times, taking a bit off each time. Putting in the new pin was fine. I had a hard time getting the lever all the way down also but after I filed a few times I would push down on the handguard while moving the lever down. I figured this would give me the tightest fit. I also lightly oiled the hinge on the handgrip and the stock release. I'm a taller guy @6'4" and now I can size the rifle to my body much better. End result on my Tula refurb chrome bore and Tapco butt pad:

I think I will polish the bolt for my next gun #### garage session.:dancingbanana:
