Hello,

I'm in an enviable position of having "inherited" a number of free guns after a friend's father moved into a home. I don't think of any of them were ever registered. Well, we couldn't find any documentation among his papers. I'd like to positively identify them and have them registered. There doesn't seem to be any serial number of this either.

Onto the shotgun. What is it? Useful, functional or wallhanger?

Thanks.

THE PROOF MARK of a LION over a line with PV under it is a later proof mark my source say " after 1924". It could be an old gun that was reproofed after 1924. The barrels look like DAMASCUS but check the top rib for words like "FINE DAMASCUS FINISH" or something that implies DAMASCUS but doesn't say it is. Because if it is a finish it is a solid steel barrel which makes it similar to present barrels and thought to be safe with modern loads. The problem here is ,even if the barrel is a solid steel DAMASCUS FINISHED barrel the chambers of these old guns were shorter than the present day chambers. What happens is even though a modern 2 3/4 inch shot shell will fit and fire there is no place for the crimp to open up to and let the shot and wad come out, the shot and wad manage to do it but the pressures are great and sometimes the guns survive and sometimes they don't . SO, if you want to shoot it and it is tight and a gunsmith has checked the chambers for proper length and the barrels are DAMASCUS FINISH , it MIGHT BE SAFE to fire light loads from it. As for who made it , if there is no name on it , it is a BELGIAN double barrel hammer shotgun.

JABC. Just Another Belgian Clunker.

The proofs say 12-65 which means a 2-1/2" chamber. The top lever looks well over to the left. Damascus or not they barrels don't look in great shape.

It's a wall hanger.

it's a JABC , with taped forend and all. the barrels are in bad shape , pitted and the whole bag. i've got more than a few of these myself and i think they're just great, but don't ask me why.if only they could talk. whether it 's damascus or not and i think it is, it's definately a wall hanger. enjoy!!
