Hi I just bought myself a LMT and went to the range to try it today for the first time and I'm still smiling:D. My question is when I was firing it there was a ringing noise coming form the spring in the stock after every shot! Is there any trick to keep it form making the spring vibrating sound or do I have to live with it? Just thought to get some feedback! Thanks

live with it, its normal, it is supposed to make a "sproing" when it cycles. Some people have put grease in there to reduce the noise and think that they are giving it good lubrication. All it does is attract dirt and slows the buffer down, don't do it. CLP/breakfree is all you need for an AR
 
A heavy buffer or a pneumatic buffer will also help. Also since I assume you have a carbine (7" gas system) which is VERY harsh on the BCG and really slams her home. A midlength gas system of 9" or a rifle of 11.5 (IIRC) is and feels much smoother and the sprong noise is reduced highly. Look into try a longer gas system if that interests you.

"VERY harsh"? Do you have any data to back that up? What are the outcomes of this VERY harsh? Scotty, I'm sorry, but his is how internet BS spreads. So I'm calling :bsFlag:

The OP heard the buffer/action spring in operation, I don't see how relevant advice would be to buy a new upper.

To the OP, take the buffer/action spring out and give a 2 second spray of aerosol white lithium grease down the receiver extension. This will quiet the noise.

Thanks guys! I just thought last night when I was giving it a good cleaning that there was maybe some simple thing you AR junkies might do to reduce the noise. No sweat I'll leave it as is I have no problem with the noise or with the LMT it's a great piece of hardware and was real accurate to.

The sound is normal.

As the short gas system being hard on the BCG I'm gonna call BS. At work I'm running a 10.5 LMT with thousands of rounds through it. No problems whatsoever. None of my other shorties from reputable builders (ie. MSTN) had difficulties either.

And how many tens of thousands of M4? And C8?

An interesting civilian mod, and marketed well, but one that doesn't do anything that a heavier buffer doesn't already accomplish (reduce bolt speed/cyclic rate).

Pressure is determined by gas port size, as it controls the volumetric flow of gas since gas velocity is constant.

You can generate the same volumetric flow using different gas tube length,- whether it is carbine or midlength - Even when the gas velocity is different, by controlling gas port diameter the same pressure can be generated at the gas block.

What really matters is the timing issue - shorter gas tube activates the extraction cycle earlier because the distance of travel is shorter. THis also means the cycle begins at a higher point on the chamber pressure when the brass case hasn't completely receded to the final size. The H-buffer is an artificial way of jacking up the duration of the pressure pluse required to impart the total amount of energy need to get the system moving.

On the other hand, a midlength system increases the travel distance and therefore extraction cycle begins at a lower pressure point, thus there is less a need to delay the initiation of the cycle.
 
IMHO Midlength should only be used with 16" barrels anything less 14.5", 12.5", etc etc stick it to carbine gas system.

Walt is right my 16" LMT works with Car buffer as well as H buffer.
 
My reasoning behind my statement is that I found when comparing a 14.5' carbine to a 16' mid length that the middy had much less wear and tear on the parts at the same round count with the same maintenance. A middy has about 9K less pressure IIRC than a carbine which IMO means a longer bolt life as its not being slammed home as hard with its lower velocity.

that being said I have never had any issues with carbines however it is some stuff I picked up reading around and talking to others in the know.

ymmv. I think we can all agree that the carbine gas system is defiantly more 'violent' than a middy or a rifle length.
